NEWS: President Donald Trump said House Republicans should vote to release files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case, a startling reversal after previously fighting the proposal.

“We have nothing to hide, and it’s time to move on from this Democrat Hoax perpetrated by Radical Left Lunatics in order to deflect from the Great Success of the Republican Party,” Mr Trump wrote on social media shortly after landing at Joint Base Andrews following a weekend in Florida.

Democrats and some Republicans have been pushing a measure that would force the Justice Department to make public more documents from the case.

The president’s shift is an implicit acknowledgement that supporters of the measure have enough votes to pass the House, although it has an unclear future in the Senate.

The bill would force the Justice Department to release all files and communications related to Epstein, as well as any information about the investigation into his death in federal prison.

Information about Epstein’s victims or ongoing federal investigations would be allowed to be redacted.

“There could be 100 or more” votes from Republicans, said representative Thomas Massie, among the lawmakers discussing the legislation on Sunday news show appearances.

“I’m hoping to get a veto-proof majority on this legislation when it comes up for a vote.”

Mr Massie and Democratic representative Ro Khanna introduced a discharge petition in July to force a vote on their bill. That is a rarely successful tool that allows a majority of members to bypass House leadership and force a floor vote.

Speaker Mike Johnson had panned the discharge petition effort and sent members home early for their August recess when the Republicans’ legislative agenda was upended in the clamouring for an Epstein vote.

Democrats also contend the seating of representative Adelita Grijalva was stalled to delay her becoming the 218th member to sign the petition and gain the threshold needed to force a vote. She became the 218th signature moments after taking the oath of office last week.

Mr Massie said Mr Johnson, Mr Trump and others who have been critical of his efforts would be “taking a big loss this week”.

“I’m not tired of winning yet, but we are winning,” Mr Massie said.

Mr Johnson seems to expect the House will decisively back the Epstein bill.

“We’ll just get this done and move it on. There’s nothing to hide,” he said, adding that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has been releasing “far more information than the discharge petition, their little gambit”.

The vote comes at a time when new documents are raising fresh questions about Epstein and his associates, including a 2019 email that Epstein wrote to a journalist that said Mr Trump “knew about the girls”.

The White House has accused Democrats of selectively leaking the emails to smear the Republican president.

Mr Johnson said Mr Trump “has nothing to hide from this”.

“They’re doing this to go after President Trump on this theory that he has something to do with it. He does not,” he said.

Mr Trump’s association with Epstein is well-established and the president’s name was included in records that his own Justice Department released in February as part of an effort to satisfy public interest in information from the s*x-trafficking investigation.

Mr Trump has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein and the mere inclusion of someone’s name in files from the investigation does not imply otherwise.

Epstein, who killed himself in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial, also had many prominent acquaintances in political and celebrity circles besides Mr Trump.

NEWS: A Chinese national believed to be “one of the most prolific s*x offenders of all time” has been jailed for a string of offences including r**e and upskirting, as detectives appealed for hundreds of potential victims to come forward.

Chao Xu, 33, of Greenwich, south-east London, pleaded guilty to 24 s*xual offences over the course of three years including r**e, assault by pe*******on, s*xual assault, upskirting, and voyeurism.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 14 years at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday.

The Metropolitan Police said Xu had filmed himself “ra**ng and s*xually assaulting women who appear to be unconscious or heavily incapacitated”.

Officers said three victims of serious s*xual assaults such as r**e had been identified and police were seeking a further four unidentified victims.

Detectives believe the number of victims of voyeurism and upskirting to be in the hundreds, including individuals filmed without consent in Xu’s flat, at his WeWork workplace and in public spaces including London Bridge Underground station.

Xu, who has lived in the UK since 2016 and is a graduate of the University of Greenwich, placed hidden cameras in an air freshener, women’s sanitary products, a digital clock, a speaker, and under a wash basin.

Police were first alerted to Xu’s offending after a woman reported to officers that her drink had been spiked and she had subsequently been s*xually assaulted at a university networking event in June at his address in Glaisher Street, Deptford.

The 33-year-old, who was granted a UK work visa in November 2023, gave guests at his networking events a drink he called “the spring of life” containing various alcoholic substances and Chinese herbal medicines.

Detective Sergeant Marc Gadd said: “During that first evening that the victim reported s*xual offending, we believe he mixed some of the spring of life with other stupefying agents to render his intended victim vulnerable and unconscious.”

Forensic analysis confirmed the victim had GHB and muscle relaxant scopolamine in her system.

Xu, who was director of a recruitment business which helped recent Chinese graduates secure employment in London, would regularly host networking events for University of Greenwich and King’s College London students at his home address.

Following a search of Xu’s address, officers found hidden cameras throughout the property as well as digital storage devices – with hundreds of intimate images and videos of women on his phone believed to have been obtained without consent.

Acting Detective Superintendent Lewis Sanderson said: “Upon forensic examination of Xu’s phone, officers uncovered deeply disturbing material.

“The device contained videos and images taken from a point of view perspective, showing Xu ra**ng and seriously s*xually assaulting women who appear to be unconscious or heavily incapacitated.”

The officer added: “We believe he is one of the most prolific s*x offenders of all time.

“He was known to host networking events at his residence, which were presented as professional gatherings, but as we now know, they were used to facilitate criminal behaviour.”

NEWS: Storm Claudia will bring torrential rain to some parts of England and Wales.

Amber warnings for “persistent and heavy” rain come into force from noon on Friday until the end of the day and cover parts of Wales, the Midlands, the South West, the South East and east of England.

In England some places could have 80mm of rain, while part of Wales may be hit by 100-150mm on the higher ground, or 50-75mm generally across the region, the Met Office warning says.

All of this may be “exacerbated” by strong easterly winds, as well as thunderstorms later on Friday, the forecaster adds.

Storm Claudia, named by the Spanish Meteorological Agency, has already brought heavy rain and strong winds to Spain and Portugal.

A separate yellow warning for rain covers much of England, from Cheshire and North Yorkshire to the south coast, for a 24-hour period from 6am on Friday, and a warning for winds of up to 70mph in some western areas of the UK is in place from noon until midnight.

The Met Office said the weather may cause power cuts, travel disruption and damage to buildings.

Travellers are urged to be cautious as a large swathe of central and southern England and Wales on Friday into Saturday will be soaked.

The slow-moving downpours mean “some areas could see up to a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours”, according to Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert.

He added: “Much of this will fall on saturated ground, increasing the chances of flooding and contributing to the amber warnings we have issued.

“Within the amber warning areas, some could see in excess of 150mm accumulate during the event, with 60-80mm fairly widely.

“Gusty winds in the north-west of England and north-west Wales is an additional hazard, with 60-70mph gusts possible in exposed places within the warning area.”

Unlike many named storms, Storm Claudia is not expected to directly cross the country, and instead will maintain its position in the West, the Met Office said.

Floods minister Emma Hardy said: “As parts of the country are forecast to experience heavy rainfall, I recognise people will be concerned about the risk to their homes and livelihoods.

“I am in regular contact with the Environment Agency on their response to the expected flooding who, alongside local authorities and the emergency services, are already taking action to keep communities safe.”

The AA has advised against travelling in the “hazardous weather”, saying: “Safety comes first. Conditions may change quickly, so stay updated and make sure you’re prepared before you travel.”

It added: “Flood water can appear quickly, and even shallow water can be dangerous – never try to drive through it.”

National Rail advised passengers to check before travelling with disruption to services expected across England, Wales and Scotland on Friday and Saturday.

In Devon, flooding between Exeter and Barnstaple is expected to affect trains until Sunday, with a reduced service on Chiltern Railways on Friday when CrossCountry, London Northwestern and West Midlands services are likely to be hit by the bad weather.

Speed restrictions were in place on some ScotRail services on Friday morning.

The Environment Agency said there is likely to be some surface water and river flooding in the north of England.

NEWS: Three Bronze Age log boats which were preserved on the riverbed of a silted-up creek for more than 3,000 years are to go on display following a conservation project.

A log boat is a simple vessel made by hollowing out a single tree trunk, and some of these boats were used to lay fish traps.

Nine log boats, from the Bronze and Iron Age, were discovered near Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire in 2011, and they have since been preserved in climate-controlled conditions using a specialised wax and water solution.

Three of the vessels, found at Must Farm, are to be displayed at Flag Fen Archaeology Park near Peterborough following a 13-year conservation project.

Jacqueline Mooney, general manager of Flag Fen Archaeology Park, said: “The Must Farm boats have lain undisturbed for over 3,000 years, preserved in the peaty silence of time.

“Now, through our new exhibition, they emerge to tell their story.

“This is more than an archaeological display — it’s a powerful reconnection with the people who once lived, worked and journeyed through this landscape.”

The excavation of the log boats in 2011 and 2012 was funded by landowner Forterra, a manufacturer of building products, in advance of quarrying operations.

Iona Robinson Zeki, archaeological researcher at Cambridge Archaeological Unit, said: “The Must Farm log boats are an amazing discovery: they reveal that these simple, yet supremely effective boats were used to navigate a fenland river for almost a millennium.

“We can see, in their varied construction, how the qualities of different types and sizes of trees were used to make boats ranging from small, manoeuvrable canoes to long, stable punt-like vessels.

“These vessels were used to lay fish traps but also to transport people potentially alongside animals and materials.”

The log boats to go on display are a Middle Bronze Age 6.3m oak vessel, which has areas of charring inside; a 2.2m fragment of a Middle Bronze Age oak boat featuring an intricate repair within the hull; and a 0.8m fragment of an Early Bronze Age boat made of field maple.

NEWS: A website and app supporting children and young people with type 1 diabetes has been rolled out across Scotland, with the parent of one patient saying it has become her “go-to resource”.

The DigiBete platform provides age-appropriate resources and guidance for children, young people and families living with the lifelong condition, which occurs when the pancreas produces little or no insulin.

Funded by the Scottish Government until 2026, the platform offers educational videos, quizzes, and resources covering everything from managing blood glucose levels to dealing with sick days.

It has a communication tool that enables clinics to send personalised information to patients, and a personal diary where users can record insulin doses, appointments and notes.

The content automatically adapts as children mature, ensuring it supports people from diagnosis through to adulthood, and resources are available in more than 100 languages.

The DigiBete app is now being used by more than 3,000 people across Scotland following a “highly successful” scale-up programme.

Dr Robbie Lyndsay, national diabetes lead at NHS Scotland, said: “As clinicians, we are keen to try to provide timely, convenient information to people with diabetes.

“From discussion with paediatricians in Scotland they have been delighted to see this innovative approach and value future use of DigiBete.”

There are about 4,500 children and young people living with type 1 diabetes in Scotland.

Some children are being diagnosed as young as two, placing responsibility on parents and carers to understand and manage the condition.

Data from the pilot phase found 100% of clinicians surveyed wanted to continue using the platform, citing significant time savings as they no longer needed to create individual educational resources.

NEWS: Puffins have been found nesting on a Co Antrim nature reserve for the first time in 25 years.

The discovery was made by Ulster Wildlife on the Isle of Muck off Islandmagee and is being hailed as a major milestone in the recovery of the vulnerable seabirds in Northern Ireland.

The comeback is the result of a seabird recovery project, launched by the nature conservation charity in 2017 to remove invasive brown rats, the biggest threat to seabird eggs and chicks, from the tiny island.

A programme of winter grazing has also been implemented to keep vegetation low to reduce cover for the rats.

The charity said that rats are a major issue for many seabird islands across the UK, and similar eradication projects elsewhere have proved vital in protecting breeding sites and helping seabirds bounce back.

It said the signs of recovery at the Isle of Muck have been visible for some time. Annual surveys began to record steady increases in eider ducks, guillemots, herring gulls and lesser-backed gulls on and around the island.

There was a breakthrough in 2024 when five puffins were spotted prospecting the island.

Then this summer two puffins were caught on camera coming out of a nesting burrow on the grassy cliff ledges – a positive sign that the birds are breeding.

Andy Crory, Nature Reserves Manager with Ulster Wildlife, said: “For decades, there had been whispers that puffins once bred on the Isle of Muck, a story that felt more like folklore than fact.

“But now, thanks to years of hard work creating a safe haven for thousands of seabirds, that myth is becoming a reality.

“Seabirds face immense challenges globally, with 24 of the 25 breeding species at risk of local or global extinction.

“So, while a handful of puffins on a tiny island may seem small, this moment is huge – it proves that seabird restoration works.

“Our hope is that the Isle of Muck will become a thriving stronghold for puffins and, in time, tempt back other lost species like the Manx shearwater.

“For now, we’re waiting with great excitement to see if the first ‘pufflings’ – baby puffins – appear on the cliffs next summer.

“That truly would be the icing on the cake.”

The ongoing rat eradication programme and species monitoring at the Isle of Muck Nature Reserve is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs via the Carrier Bag Levy.

The Isle of Muck Nature Reserve is not accessible to the public, and crossing the tidal tombolo when it becomes visible at low tide is extremely dangerous, the charity said.

Ulster Wildlife is urging people to keep away and admire the island from a safe distance to give the returning puffins the best possible chance to settle and breed successfully next summer.

NEWS: UK economic growth slowed to 0.1% for the past three months in a blow to the Chancellor ahead of the autumn Budget.

Official figures also showed that the economy declined by 0.1% in September after the cyber attack on Jaguar Land Rover hit activity in the manufacturing sector.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said UK gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.1% between July and September, following a 0.3% increase between April and June.

Economists had predicted growth of 0.2% for the quarter, with expectations that September would show zero growth.

ONS director of economic statistics Liz McKeown said: “Growth slowed further in the third quarter of the year with both services and construction weaker than in the previous period.

“Across the quarter as a whole manufacturing drove the weakness in production.

“There was a particularly marked fall in car production in September, reflecting the impact of a cyber incident, as well as a decline in the often-erratic pharmaceutical industry.”
