NEWS: A self-portrait by the British artist Lucian Freud is expected to sell for millions, with estimates ranging from £8 million to £12 million.

The art and luxury auction house Christie’s will offer three major works in its 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale on October 15, including Freud’s Self-portrait Fragment.

Among the pieces going up for sale is Woman With A Tulip which is estimated to sell for between £3 million and £5 million, and Sleeping Head which is estimated at between £2 million and £3 million.

Katharine Arnold, vice-chairman and head of post-war and contemporary art at Christie’s Europe, told the PA news agency: “They are historic. They’re from the 1940s all the way through to the 1960s and they mark three distinct moments in the artist’s life.

“These three paintings together show a transition for Freud, both personally, but also professionally.”

Of Self-portrait Fragment Arnold said: “Self-portraits are rare.

“Self portraiture was a very important part of Freud’s practice. I think he made over 30 self-portraits throughout his career.

Two of the paintings were last displayed at the National Gallery retrospective from 2022 to 2023.

All three pieces will be be available for the public to see at an exhibition at Christie’s London from October 8-15.

NEWS: Rachel Reeves has been urged to freeze alcohol duty in her upcoming Budget.

An open letter from the Scotch Whisky Association, UK Spirits Alliance, Welsh Whisky Association, English Whisky Guild and Drinks Ireland has pushed the Chancellor not to increase the rate of excise duty on alcohol until the end of the current Parliament.

The letter – signed by the bosses of the bodies – said the current regime was “unfair” and has put a “strain” on members after a 14% increase in the past two years, while the total tax take for the levy fell.

“The businesses we represent are struggling – with some halting investment and even production in the UK, or looking elsewhere to invest; and others are being forced to reduce headcounts,” the letter said. “For some of this country’s most iconic products, this is deeply worrying.”

It added: “That is why we are calling on you to announce a multi-year freeze for spirits, spanning the lifetime of this parliament; and to ensure there will be no further widening of the tax differential between spirits and other alcohol categories.

“The UK is a world-class distilling nation, and such a move to freeze excise duty would demonstrate this Government’s commitment to some of the UK’s most recognisable products – whether that be gin, Scotch whisky or others – and give our members the confidence to invest and help the government’s growth agenda.

“A duty freeze should not be seen as a handout, but an investment. Our members support jobs and growth throughout the UK – you have the chance to harness this potential, let’s grasp it and freeze duty.”

HM Treasury spokesperson said: “Our distilleries are vital to Britain’s economy, so we’re making it easier for them to thrive: no export duty, lower licensing fees, reduced tariffs, and a cap on corporation tax.

“Whisky and gin exporters are some of the biggest winners from our recent India trade deal, cutting tariffs from 150% to 40% and boosting whisky exports by £1 billion.

“At the same time, we’re safeguarding public finances to ensure continued support for the NHS and other public services.”

NEWS: France has recognised Palestinian statehood at the start of a high-profile meeting at the United Nations aimed at galvanising support for a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict.

More nations are expected to follow, in defiance of Israel and the United States.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement in the UN General Assembly hall received loud applause from the more than 140 leaders in attendance.

The Palestinian delegation, including its UN ambassador, Riyad Mansour, could be seen standing and applauding as the declaration was made.

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, was seen applauding on a live-camera view after the US government banned him from attending the UN gathering in person.

“True to the historic commitment of my country to the Middle East, to peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians, this is why I declare that today, France recognises the state of Palestine,” Mr Macron said.

The meeting and expanded recognition of Palestinian statehood are expected to have little if any actual impact on the ground, where Israel is waging another major offensive in the Gaza Strip and expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Mr Macron announced recognition of the state of Palestine at the start of the meeting, at which several world leaders were expected to speak.

The UK, Canada, Australia and Portugal recognised the state of Palestine on Sunday, and the Palestinians expect a total of 10 countries to do so in the coming days.

Around three-quarters of the 193 members of the United Nations recognise Palestine, but major Western nations had until recently declined to, saying one could only come about through negotiations with Israel.

Palestinians have welcomed the moves towards recognition, hoping they might someday lead to independence.

NEWS: Citroen and Vauxhall have issued a recall on the C3, C3 Aircross and Frontera models over an issue where their brake pedals could become detached.

Citroen has ordered another ‘stop-drive’ action to customers who have taken delivery of the latest generation of C3 and C3 Aircross models.

Customers haven’t yet received their new Vauxhall Fronteras, with the vehicles being inspected before deliveries commence.

The recall was issued after right-hand-drive examples of Citroen C3 and C3 Aircross’ may not have a brake pedal box fitted to the correct specification for UK vehicles, which could cause a loss of braking.

This is the French firm’s third ‘stop-drive’ recall this year, after certain C3, C4, DS3, DS4 and DS5 models were found to have faulty airbag units.

A Citroen spokesperson told the PA News Agency: “The safety of its customers is Stellantis’ highest priority. During our regular quality process checks, an investigation revealed that certain right-hand-drive Citroen C3 and C3 Aircross could have a pedal box assembly that is not to the correct specification and is at risk of loss of brake capability.

“If this were to happen, the automatic emergency braking (AEB) and the electronic parking brake would remain fully operational. We are initiating a stop-drive action to protect all customers of the Citroen C3 and C3 Aircross affected. Customers will be provided a replacement vehicle whilst their car is checked and, if necessary, rectified.”

They added: “Stellantis remains fully committed to acting swiftly, transparently and responsibly in addressing this issue, if any customer has any concerns they should contact customer services or their local retailer. Vauxhall aren’t impacted as deliveries haven’t started, vehicles are being checked and, if necessary, rectified.”

NEWS: Two charities have severed ties with Sarah, Duchess of York, after it was disclosed she sent a message to pa******le financier Jeffrey Epstein describing him as a “supreme friend”.

A spokesman for the duchess previously said she apologised to Epstein in April 2011 for associating him with paedophilia in the media because he threatened to sue her.

On Monday, children’s hospice Julia’s House said the correspondence made it “inappropriate for her to continue as a patron”.

The charity’s statement read: “Following the information shared this weekend on the Duchess of York’s correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, Julia’s House has taken the decision that it would be inappropriate for her to continue as a patron of the charity.

“We have advised the Duchess of York of this decision and thank her for her past support.”

Following the announcement from Julia’s House, food allergy charity The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation also announced it had dropped the duchess as a patron. The charity, which was launched after teenager Natasha Ednan-Laperouse died from a severe allergic reaction to eating a baguette, asked the duchess to become a patron when it was founded in 2019.

In a statement, founders Nadim and Tanya Ednan-Laperouse said: “We were disturbed to read of Sarah, Duchess of York’s, correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein.

“Sarah Ferguson has not been actively involved with the charity for some years. She was a patron, but in the light of the recent revelations, we have taken the decision that it would be inappropriate for her to continue to be associated with the charity. We would like to thank her for her kindness and support in the past.”

The Sun newspaper reported that the duchess “humbly apologised” to Epstein for linking him to paedophilia in the media, describing him as “steadfast” and “generous”.

Her spokesman said it was sent “in the context of advice the duchess was given to try to assuage Epstein and his threats”.

The email stemmed from an interview with the Evening Standard on March 7, 2011, in which she apologised for accepting £15,000 from the s*x offender.

During the interview, she told the newspaper: “I abhor paedophilia and any s*xual abuse of children and know that this was a gigantic error of judgment on my behalf. I am just so contrite I cannot say.

“Whenever I can, I will repay the money and have nothing ever to do with Jeffrey Epstein ever again.”

A little over a month later, the duchess sent a message to Epstein, in which she said: “I know you feel hellaciously let down by me, and I must humbly apologise to you and your heart for that. You have always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family.”

It continued: “I was advised in no uncertain terms, to have nothing to do with you and to not speak or email you. If I did — I would cause more problems to you, the Duke and myself. I was broken and lost.

“So please understand. I didn’t want to hurt Andrew one more time. I was in over-riding fear. I am sorry.”

The duchess’s spokesman previously said she had spoken of her regret about her association with Epstein and “does not resile” from condemning him publicly.

He added that Epstein had threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with paedophilia. Epstein was found dead in his cell at a federal jail in Manhattan, in the US, in August 2019 while he awaited trial on s*x-trafficking charges. The death was ruled a su***de.

NEWS: A fifth of British adults think the tea they drink originates in the UK, research for Fairtrade has found as the organisation calls on brands to be more transparent about where their products come from.

The research, carried out by consultancy Kantar, suggests widespread misconceptions persist around the origins of the country’s beloved “cuppa”.

Almost all tea brewed in homes and cafes across the UK is imported from overseas, with most starting its journey in Kenya, followed by other countries like India and Malawi.

A small amount of tea can only be grown in specific microclimates in the UK, such as on the Tregothnan estate near Falmouth in Cornwall, with climate change making cultivation in more areas increasingly feasible.

But the survey of 1,365 British adults – taken between August 14 and 18 – found that 21% believe tea they drink originates in the UK, a figure which rises to 46% among those aged 25-34.

The research also suggests that more than a third of UK adults (37%) believe most of their tea comes from India.

Tea growers around the world often face significant challenges – including low pay, inequality, and climate change impacts – with recent Fairtrade research finding that just one in five Kenyan tea growers earn enough to cover their basic living needs.

For all tea sourced on Fairtrade terms, producers are guaranteed a minimum price and receive a premium – an additional amount of money that they can use to invest in their farms and communities.

The recent survey results also suggest 86% of British shoppers want brands to be more upfront about sourcing, and 75% think it is important they provide clear information about prices paid to farmers in countries like Kenya.

And more than half (55%) of respondents said they believe businesses should take a ”large amount” or “full responsibility” for protecting the human rights of workers in their supply chains.

It comes as Fairtrade calls for companies to “brew if fair” during its annual Fairtrade Fortnight campaign, starting on Monday.

Marie Rumsby, director of advocacy and communications at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “Public support is growing and these figures show that consumers want action from all stakeholders involved.

“It’s time to challenge industry myths and scale up change for the people behind our tea, with UK brands and retailers as pivotal partners.”

NEWS: A quarter of people think the next archbishop of Canterbury should talk less about political topics and that it is unacceptable for someone in the role to speak about immigration and asylum, new polling has suggested.

The Church of England’s most senior bishop is expected to be named in the coming weeks, almost a year after Justin Welby announced he was to resign over failures in handling a safeguarding scandal.

Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell, who has been the stand-in while the top Canterbury role is vacant, recently waded into the current debate on immigration, accusing Reform UK leader Nigel Farage of an “isolationist, short-term kneejerk” response to the Channel crossings crisis.

Mr Cottrell said Mr Farage, who has promised mass deportations, was not offering a solution to the “big issues” driving people in small inflatable boats to risk the dangerous crossing.

New Ipsos polling, for the PA news agency, suggested 28% of respondents want whoever ends up as the new archbishop of Canterbury to talk less about political topics, while less than a fifth (17%) think they should speak out more.

Almost two in five people (37%) feel it is acceptable for the Church of England’s most senior religious leader to speak about immigration and asylum but 25% say it is unacceptable for them to do so.

While no shortlist of candidates has been published, one of those thought to be a favourite for the role is a former refugee who fled Iran with her family as a teenager in the wake of the Iranian revolution in 1980.

Bishop of Chelmsford, Guli Francis-Dehqani, who has previously spoken of her own story and how she has “a sense of the real trauma that many asylum seekers have experienced”, would also make history by becoming the first female archbishop of Canterbury were she to be selected.

Others thought to be in the running include the Bishop of Bath and Wells, Michael Beasley, a former epidemiologist who was a member of the Church’s Covid taskforce during the pandemic.

A committee, chaired by a former director-general of the MI5 security service, must reach a two-thirds majority decision on who should be the new archbishop, with a nomination then presented to the Prime Minister who passes it to the King.

While technically the King is head of the Church of England, the person holding the role of archbishop of Canterbury is the most senior bishop and is the spiritual leader of the Church and the worldwide Anglican Communion.

In a job description published earlier this year by the Diocese of Canterbury, it was stated the person filling the role should be someone willing to be “unapologetic about offering a Christian perspective to local, national and international dialogue”.

The Ipsos polling for PA found that more than half of people felt it acceptable for someone in the role to speak out about homelessness and poverty, and 40% said it was acceptable to speak out on welfare benefits.

NEWS: Members of the Israeli government have “genocidal intent” in Gaza, a newly-appointed UK minister has said.

Dr Zubir Ahmed – the MP for Glasgow South West – was appointed as a health minister in the Prime Minister’s re-shuffle brought about by the resignation of Angela Rayner earlier this month.

The UK Government has been reticent to describe the crisis in Gaza as a “genocide”, despite activist calls and Scottish First Minister John Swinney taking such a step.

Speaking to Holyrood magazine in an interview conducted days before he was appointed as a minister, Dr Ahmed said: “The arc of this, even in the last couple of months, has gone into places that are unconscionable, horrendous and really are, you know, things I thought I would never see in a so-called western democracy.

“We have members of that government [Israel] who certainly have genocidal intent – members of that government indicted by the International Criminal Court. It’s an unprecedented diplomatic position to be in.”

Dr Ahmed – a well-respected surgeon – said he would have been in Gaza with the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians the day before the election last year had the Rafah crossing in the south of the territory not been closed two weeks before.

The MP added that he felt “relatively powerless” about the situation in Gaza.

“There’s not a singular military solution that the British Government can enact to stop this and that is a really, really painful thing to say, to be in the place of power like we are right now and to tell you that I am relatively powerless in this conflict,” he said.

“That does not mean I’m not responsible.

“It doesn’t mean I don’t have any agency and I don’t need to strive to make a difference, but to tell you that I feel relatively powerless in the place of power in the UK is painful.”

The UK Government has been contacted for comment.

NEWS: V**es should be sold in plain packages to reduce their appeal to children, a new study suggests.

But adults are still likely to buy e-ci******es sold in plain packs, researchers found.

Experts say that using plain packaging could reduce the number of children who take up va**ng while still being used by adults as a tool to quit smoking.

It comes as a new study assessed whether standardised packaging and limited flavour descriptions affected the appeal of v**e pods to British children and adults.

The study, led by UCL and King’s College London researchers, involved 2,770 children and young people aged 11 to 18 and just under 4,000 adults.

They were shown v**e packs and children were asked about whether they felt their peers would be interested in trying the product, while adults were asked if they themselves would be interested in trying it.

The different packs were: usual branded packs; a plain white pack with the usual description of the product in black lettering, such a “blu razz”; a plain pack with limited flavour descriptions, such as “blue raspberry”; and a standardised pack with the flavour listed as a code instead of a name, such as “FR248”.

Among the children and young people questioned, half (53%) said their peers would be interested in trying v**es in their usual packaging.

This dropped to 38% when they were shown v**es in standardised packs with usual flavour descriptions.

Among adults, interest remained similar whether packs were standardised in white or branded packing.

The researchers also found that standardised packaging did not affect how harmful adults perceived v**es to be compared with ci******es.

“Standardised packaging and limiting flavour descriptors reduced youth appeal but had minimal effect on adults’ interest or harm perception,” the research team wrote in the journal Lancet Regional Health Europe.

Usual v**e packaging often includes “colourful designs and conceptual flavour names”, which appeal to children, the authors of the paper said.

NEWS: Sir Ed Davey has branded Elon Musk a “criminal”, as his party called for Parliament to haul in the tech billionaire to answer for his “fight back” or “die” comments at a central London rally.

The Liberal Democrat leader has also called for an Ofcom investigation into X, the social media site owned by Mr Musk, and the businessman personally, for failing to uphold their duties under the Online Safety Act.

Sir Ed is expected to continue his feud with the Tesla and X owner in his speech to the Lib Dems’ conference on Tuesday.

Asked by Sky News’ Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips if he thought the US businessman was a criminal, the Lib Dem leader replied: “Yes.

“Not just because of the awful things he’s done, inciting violence, for example, he says a civil war in our country is inevitable, that our democratically elected Government should be overthrown.

“They were bad enough.

“But on his platform, there are examples of adverts pushing people on self-harm, on grooming, even selling videos showing pa******le acts, child s*x abuse acts. I think he should be held to account for them. Him personally and his business.”

After calling for criminal sanctions against Mr Musk, Sir Ed also “we’re a party of free speech”, when asked if the Lib Dems shared values of those who attended the Unite the Kingdom rally.

Elsewhere, Sir Ed was told by the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg that Lib Dem activists feel shut down and cross as they were halted from debating a ban on trans women holding women’s roles in the party on the first day of the party’s Bournemouth conference.

Sir Ed replied: “Well, I’m sorry if they’re cross, but I do think the truth is what I’m saying, that we abide by the law.”

The party had a “full debate on LGBT-plus rights, including trans issues” at a conference earlier in the year, he also said.

During his headline conference address on Tuesday, the Lib Dem leader will say Britain “must stand up to Elon Musk, and properly enforce our laws so he can’t get away with inflicting harm on our kids”.

Mr Musk is “keen to meddle in our democracy” because of “his ego, power and wealth”, the Lib Dem leader is expected to add.
