Good morning fam 👋

Welcome to my
🥕 JUNE CARROT SERIES — Part 3:

Beating Carrot Fly! 🪰

Carrot fly is the NUMBER ONE enemy of UK carrot growers. The larvae burrow into your carrots leaving brown tunnels. But don't worry — here's how to beat them 👇

🛡️ Best defences:
• Fine mesh/enviromesh over your bed — most effective method!

• 60cm high barrier around your carrot patch — carrot fly flies low to the ground

• Grow in raised beds or containers above 60cm — fly rarely reaches them

• Plant onions, leeks or chives alongside — the smell confuses the fly

• Choose resistant varieties like Flyaway or Resistafly

💡 Good news: June sowings often MISS the first generation of carrot fly! That's another reason June is a great time to sow .

Golden rule: If you need to thin your carrots, do it in the evening and remove all thinnings straight away. The smell attracts the fly!

JUNE CARROT SERIES — Part 2:

🎆WATERING & THINNING 🥕

Hey Fam 👋 So Your carrot seeds are in the ground — now what?

Here's how to look after them 👇💧 Watering:
• Keep soil consistently moist while seeds germinate (takes 14-21 days — be patient!)

• Once established, water deeply but less often

• Never let soil dry out then flood it — that causes splitting!

• In a dry spell, water every 2-3 days✂️

🎆Thinning:
• When seedlings are about 5cm tall, thin to 5-7cm apart

• Do this in the EVENING — crushed carrot leaves attract carrot fly during the day

• Water after thinning to settle soil around remaining plants

• Remove all thinnings from the plot — don't leave them lying around!Remember:
overcrowded carrots = thin, spindly carrots. Give them space to grow! 🌿How are your seedlings coming along? Drop a photo below! 📸👇

Hey Fam 👋
Welcome to my JUNE CARROT SERIES — Part 1

Great for first time carrot growers or for anybody who could use a few tips

INTRODUCTION & SOWING🥕

Did you know June is one of the BEST months to sow carrots here in UK ? The soil is warm, days are long, and you'll be harvesting from September! Here's how to get started 👇🌱 Best varieties to sow now:

• Nantes 2 — sweet & reliable
• Autumn King — big, stores well
• Chantenay — great for heavier soils
• Flyaway — carrot fly resistant!🪴

🎆How to sow:
• Pick a sunny spot (6+ hours of sun)
• Rake soil fine — remove any stones
• Make a shallow drill about 1cm deep
• Sow seeds thinly — mix with sand to spread evenly
• Cover lightly and water with a fine rose
• Space rows 15-20cm apart

🎆Top tip: Sow a short row every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest! 💡Got heavy clay? Try raised beds or containers with compost and sharp sand for straighter carrots 💪Who's sowing carrots this week? 👇🥕
