If you're self-employed or run a limited company, mileage is one of the most commonly missed — and misclaimed — expenses.

And no, guessing the mileage at the end of the year doesn’t hold up if HMRC ever ask.

If you’re not tracking this properly, you're either losing money or risking a rejected claim. Neither is ideal.

We can help you build this into your systems — no spreadsheets needed.

Running a business solo means tax can sneak up on you. A quick August check-in will keep you in control:

Are you setting aside enough for tax? (20–30% of profits is a good guide)

Have you kept on top of expenses — or is it all sitting in a shoebox or app?

Getting close to the £90k VAT threshold? Don’t leave it until it’s too late.

A 30-minute mid-year review could save you hours of stress and hundreds in tax. Worth doing before autumn hits.

If your spouse or civil partner has unused personal allowance or lower rate tax bands, and they’re a shareholder in your company, you can legally distribute part of your company’s profits to them as dividends — and they’ll be taxed at their own (lower) rate.

This means:
You share the income load between you
You use both of your allowances (e.g. £12,570 personal allowance each)
You might keep more income in the lower tax brackets, reducing your overall bill

The Tax Wins (When Structured Properly)

Let’s say:
You’re the director and 100% shareholder
Your spouse earns nothing or is on a low salary (so their personal allowance and basic rate bands are going unused)
You transfer a portion of shares to your spouse (either voting or non-voting)
The company then issues dividends proportionally based on shareholding

The result?

You can share out profit without pushing yourself into the higher rate tax band, and your spouse can receive income at 0%, 8.75% or 20%, depending on their own tax thresholds.

You don’t need to be a tax expert — that’s what I’m here for. But if you haven’t reviewed your setup this tax year, now’s the time.

Just a quick heads up — Kim will be out of the office from 18–27 August, enjoying a family holiday in Cyprus.

Daisy will be holding the fort Monday to Wednesday while she’s away, so if you need anything time-sensitive (VAT, payroll, or just something off your list), let’s sort it before 14 August.

Planning ahead avoids last-minute stress — for both of us.

If you wear a uniform for work or use your own tools, you may be entitled to claim a flat-rate tax deduction.

This includes:
Branded uniforms (even if you wash them yourself)
Tools or kit you’ve paid for as part of your job
Safety boots, gloves, or overalls in certain industries

Examples:
Electricians can claim up to £140 per year
Mechanics up to £120
Hairdressers up to £60

This isn’t just for the self-employed — even employees can claim if it’s not reimbursed by your employer. Worth checking before you leave cash on the table.

Tax code errors are one of the easiest ways to overpay tax — and July is when a lot of people notice something’s wrong.

If you’ve had a pay rise, started a new job, changed benefits (like a company car), or had more than one employer this year, your PAYE code might be out of date.

Check your code:

Use the HMRC app
Or log into your personal tax account online
Your code should reflect your current income, benefits, and personal allowance

Got a K code or BR/X code you don’t understand? We’ll decode it and make sure you’re not overpaying.

From April 2025, the tax-free dividend allowance dropped again — now just £500. That means more business owners are paying tax on their dividends than ever before.

If you haven’t reviewed your income structure this tax year, now’s the time. Let’s talk numbers, not guesswork.

We’ve had a flurry of clients forward suspicious emails and texts this month, all pretending to be from HMRC.

Here’s what to watch for:

-Messages claiming you’re owed a tax refund or have unpaid tax
-Fake links to “update your details” or enter bank info
-Threats of legal action or arrest if you don’t pay immediately

How to stay safe:

-Never click links in unexpected messages — even if they look official
-HMRC will never text asking for payment details
-Report phishing to [email protected]

Ask your accountant if you’re not sure — that’s what we’re here for. Don’t get caught out. If you’ve received a suspicious message, forward it to us and we’ll confirm what’s real.
