Strange (but true?) Out Of This World news!

Earlier this year, I teamed up alongside Ashley P. Saunders to bring to life a story about a young girl's fascination with the extraterrestrial.

It's a whimsical exploration of innocent curiosity, imagination, and the stories of a wise old book shop owner in Todmorden who's seen and heard quite a few supernatural encounters.
The short 10-minute film has been a really fun creative collaboration with Ashley - and a joy filming with my often unpredictable, but loveable granddaughter, Amelia.

Big thanks to all who helped on the project, including Colin Lyall, Chris McGrail, Thitaree Paeneam and the hugely talented Hugh Fowler for his cosmic musical contributions on the soundtrack.

A real pleasure being a volunteer at Crossflatts Primary School with Michelle Hogan , showing a few videos, sharing ideas on creativity and being in my granddaughter's classroom!

I think the children were most engaged when I suggested I would share a magic trick with them. One girl just about figured out how we filmed it. Can you?

One Step Beyond...

Following a recent successful Crowdfunder campaign, We Are Different CIC, in association with Catapult Films, has released its short film, The Man Who Was Different, about a man with unusual and extraordinary talents.

Like all fables, it illuminates an essential truth about human nature. In this case, whilst there is a huge fascination for The Man, his 'difference' also generates alarm amongst the people.

"This story is very important to me. I wrote it over 30 years old and then promptly hid it away. But the time seems right to share both the book and the film now. I always felt that the story should be set in an abstract place, stylised and in black and white. And, like all fables, it has a moral, of course. As far as the film goes, I'm very happy with Ben's animation, although seeing my two-dimensional characters 'move' for the first time was kind of spooky and surreal!"

A few years ago, I wrote and published a story called The Man Who Was Different, as a reminder that we should be proud of our differences, no matter who we are or what we look or sound like.

Since then, the story has been successfully piloted in a few schools, initiating lots of positive conversations about self-belief, diversity and how to combat peer pressure. My aim is to help more children better understand and express themselves and be sure of their place in today’s diverse, multicultural society.

Encouraged by several head teachers, I am creating a short film version of the story so that more conversations might happen inside and outside the classroom.

So, to all my friends on here, here goes...

To help fund the short animated film production and to enable me to then give away the film and other creative resources to schools and disadvantaged communities free of charge, I have set up a Crowdfunder project.
