345 days of The Peeblean and our favourite quote to date:

“It was operating as a fine dining restaurant for 15 years – and we are talking £100 per head and most people needed a chippie afterwards.” Iain Dempster, 2018

As the The Horseshoe Inn changes hands, local residents have taken to social media to wish Iain and Fiona Dempster all the best and thank them for re-establishing the pub in Eddleston.

Appreciation has been expressed for their sponsorship of events, fresh food and meal deliveries during COVID lockdowns and establishing the annual Eddleston Elders Christmas Lunch.

The approach looks set to continue with the new owners hosting a ‘meet the neighbours’ social event last night.

Important information for local poultry and bird keepers.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) was confirmed near Penicuik in Scottish Borders on Thursday 18 December 2025. New disease control zones and restrictions apply in the area.

If you keep poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese etc) or captive birds (pigeons, birds of prey etc) in the blue 3km or black 10km control zone shown on the maps below, please update your details or register on the Scottish Kept Bird Register immediately. This is a legal requirement.

To do this, please visit https://keptbirdregister.service.gov.scot/ or phone 01466 405101. You must complete this process by Tuesday 30 December 2025.

Further information is also available at www.scotborders.gov.uk/avianinfluenza

It's a busy time of year, but also a time when volunteering and other contributions are very prominent. Tomorrow is the deadline for nominating a Tweeddale Citizen of the Year. Perhaps you know someone who deserves recognition.

The information required doesn't need to be lengthy. The form asks you to:

Describe the Nominee’s service to the community during the past year.

Give as much factual detail as you can of the history of the nominee’s involvement in the
service or activity for which they are nominated, and of any other community services or activities
in which they are involved.

Who benefits from your nominee’s activities? (This could be a particular age group or section
of the community. The Selection Committee wants to know who is affected by the nominee’s
work.)

Try to present the Selection Committee with a thumbnail sketch of the nominee’s personality.
(Remember that the members probably do not know your nominee.)

What makes your nominee stand out as an exceptional citizen whose contribution should be
recognised?

On now (10-12, Thurs 18 Dec) in Walkerburn…

John McClane* isnt the only one determined to make sure Christmas goes without a hitch... join us tomorrow at Nakatomi towers ahem I mean Walkerburn Village hall between 1000 and midday for some Christmas fun and games. There will be free mince pies, scones, home baking and hot drinks. I should have made it through the tunnel with the Christmas Craic-ers delivery and our favourite seasonal bingo caller will be in town.

Peebles and District Citizens Advice Bureau will be there for all your advice needs and if we are lucky we will have some carol singers.

It will be lovely to see you. X

We sat on this velvet-covered chair (originally from Time and Tide) on Sunday and can confirm it's very comfy and would be very suited to daytime napping over the festive period.
