For nearly a century, the Stewart family have been farming at Falside Farm in Fife's East Neuk.

In 2008 they changed everything when they decided to add value to their high-quality raw milk by making their own cheese.

Today produces 5 distinct cheeses - Anster, Red Anster, Smoked Anster, Whisky Smoked Cheddar, and St Andrews Farmhouse Cheddar

Their approach is unique by bringing together raw milk, heritage cultures, and their commitment to quality.

This is why I do what I do.

"Scotland's brand is a leader in high quality food and drink. We believe our business is exactly this and supporting this sector supports exceptional brands and products."

When I spoke with Ben, he talked about the importance of heritage, being custodians of the land.

The Stewart family have been at Falside Farm for the better part of a century.

They could have played it safe and continued as a traditional dairy farm, but their decision to start cheesemaking turned them into award winning artisans.

But Ben sees their role as more than just producers.

are contributing to lifting up the whole sector, and strengthening Scotlands excellent brand.

"Don't waste that milk now!"

That was what Robert Stewart said to his wife Jane on the morning she was about to make their very first cheese back in 2008.

Fast forward 16 years, and that first batch of milk was the start of one of Scotland's most popular artisan cheese companies –

A few weeks ago Ben Stewart told me the story of how they've grown their business into an award winning legacy, and how it all started by being willing to waste a wee bit of milk.

When I met with Lauren from last week to hear more about her petition, I was quite struck when she said,

"If a vegetarian or vegan can say, 'Don't feed my child meat,' you're quite within your rights to say, 'Don't feed my child [ultra-processed alternatives].'"

Now I'm far from a vegetarian myself. We still eat plenty of meat-free meals at home every week. But we always use ACTUAL vegetables.

The point of this petition isn't to have a go at anyone's choices – it's about raising the quality of food that children are fed at schools.

It's important to remember that for a long time Scotland led the way with free school meals, and that it's been a hot topic in the other UK nations in recent years. Nevertheless, there's a massive difference between a vegetable lasagne and a vegetarian lasagne with meat-free "mince".

Now I would defend anybody's right to ask not to be served meat, but why can't we ask for our kids not to be served ultra-processed foods?

This isn't a fight about removing meat from school menus – it's about making sure that they're full of real, quality, nutritious foods. Our kids deserve the best.

What our children are fed is important.

Without quality food they're not being set up well to concentrate, grow, or build the foundation for lifelong health.

They need nourishment to thrive.
