Imaginary friends: Many kids will have a Imaginary friend, and mostly this is a normal part of a child development BUT there are many times that the "friend" is not just in your child mind. There are many reports of ghosts and paranormal events that have started with / connected to the "new friend", but how do you know if your child's friend is just a friend or something else?
Its not always easy to tell, you know your child the best so your own judgement call is best. but some of the key signs are:
1) The friend "hates" or "does not like" the mum or dad
2) Your child will say that the friend is doing naughty things (like breaking objects, that are really broken)
3) The friend seems to be taking more and more of your child's time, your child becomes withdrawn and spend more time alone
4) The friend asks strange things of the child, such as to go outside (alone / at night), in many reports its involves more dangerous stuff such as going out swimming alone, ect (Stuff you would not want a young child to do alone)
5) New songs / humming (that your child sings) that you cant confirm where they learned it
6) Strange lights / orbs in photos of the child
7) The "friend" will change age (get older, or gender)
Timing is also key, if you have just moved to a new house and the friend appears this can be a sign too (of something apart from a ghost).
As i said above, many children have a imaginary friend and this is normal and over time they will grow out of this stage, always keep in mind that 99% of the this is the case, but sometimes (rarely) it can be something else (ghost ect)
