The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the construction of modern bus terminals in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones at a total cost of ₦142 billion.

The terminals will be located in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu in Edo State (South-South).

The project will be the first direct Federal Government intervention in road transport infrastructure beyond road construction. The choice of locations was based on economic viability.

The Federal Government has approved a budget of N142 billion for the development of new bus terminals nationwide.

The government has instructed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies that are still handling contracts related to the 2024 Appropriation to finalize their procurement processes by the close of September 2025.

During the Federal Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, approval for N142 billion and the deadline for completing the 2024 project procurement were both decided upon.

After the meeting, the Minister of Transportation, Sai’du Alkali, addressed State House Correspondents, confirming that bus terminals will be built in the six geopolitical zones throughout the nation.

Alkali mentioned that the terminals are planned to be located in various regions: Abeokuta in the South-West, Gombe in the North-East, Kano in the North-West, Lokoja in the North-Central, Onitsha in the South-East, and Ewu in Edo State, which is in the South-South.

He said, “This is the first time the government is having intervention in or road infrastructure apart from road construction. The idea of these terminals was chosen based on the choice of their economic viability.

“It has come to the notice of the ministry that in spite of the significance of road transportation in Nigeria, there are no bus terminals to address the interests of millions of Nigerian commuters. As a result, we have a lot of crime, road traffic accidents, and proliferation of arms and ammunition on our highways.

“So, that is what informed the ministry to approach Mr. President and indeed the Federal Executive Council to seek the approval of the construction of these bus terminals.”

The Federal Government has enacted a seven-year ban on the creation of new federal tertiary educational institutions.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, led by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, has decided to implement a five-year ban on setting up any new federal tertiary educational institutions throughout the nation. This suspension pertains to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, highlighted the reasons and importance of the moratorium. He pointed out that the pressing issue in Nigeria’s education sector is not about accessing federal tertiary institutions, but rather the problem of having too many institutions. This has resulted in a major decline in both infrastructure and workforce quality.

He said, “In our country, access to quality financial education is no longer an issue.

“What we are witnessing today is duplication of new federal tertiary institutions, a significant reduction in the current capacity of each institution, and degradation of both physical infrastructure and manpower.

“If we do not act decisively, it will lead to marked declines in educational quality and undermine the international respect that Nigerian graduates command.”

President Bola Tinubu revealed a plan on Tuesday to establish Nigeria's first-ever National Industrial Manpower Development Policy.

In a keynote address at the inauguration of the National Industrial Manpower Summit (NIMS) 2025, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, President Tinubu made an announcement, which was conveyed by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who stood in for him.

He said, “For a nation with a median age of about seventeen, Nigeria is an incredibly young country. This youthfulness is a gift, but it is also a responsibility.

“We must make our young people not just a demographic statistic but a central component of our policy-making process.

”We cannot afford to divest from our people because the world will not pause to wait for us.

“It is not just a forum for discussion; it is a call to produce actionable recommendations that will form the basis of Nigeria’s first-ever National Industrial Manpower Development Policy.

”I assure you that this administration will review, adopt, and implement viable proposals with urgency.

“Our mission is to align the education and training of our young people, and indeed the larger workforce, with the needs of industry.

“We must reverse the mismatch between what our institutions produce and what our economy requires.

”This cannot be realised unless we foster robust collaboration between the public and private sectors to prepare young Nigerians for the demands of today’s job market.

“This summit is not just a forum for discussion; it is a call to produce actionable recommendations.

“Let us commit to transforming the way we think about manpower, work, and the future of Nigeria’s industrial economy.”
