An ecommerce website isn’t only there to sell things. It also has to look after the people buying from it.

We built Printed By Robots as an online shop, which means the website handles customer details, orders and payment-related data as part of the buying process.

That makes security part of the job, not an optional extra.

Keeping software updated, using secure hosting, maintaining backups, limiting access and monitoring for problems all matter, especially when a website is taking real customer information every day.

It’s not the glamorous side of web design.

But if your website is processing orders, taking enquiries or storing personal data, it’s one of the most important.

Well, this was rather nice to see. 🟢

As part of reviewing our cyber insurance, our insurer carried out an independent external security scan of Hello HQ.

The result?

🟢 0 known exploited vulnerabilities
🟢 Attack surface: Looks Good
🟢 Email security: Looks Good
🟢 Security certificates: Looks Good
🟢 High-risk software: Looks Good

In simple terms, they looked at Hello HQ from the outside, in much the same way someone looking for an easy route into a business might.

They didn't find one.

We look after websites, hosting, domains and online services for businesses every day, so security matters enormously to us.

Anyone can say they take security seriously. It’s rather more satisfying when an independent cyber insurer runs its own checks and gives you a screen full of green lights, and we're backing that up with £1 million of specialist cyber insurance cover.

Because when businesses trust Hello HQ with their websites and online infrastructure, we take that responsibility seriously. There's a big difference between being able to build a website and being properly equipped to look after a business online.

I'll take the green lights. 🟢

Something a little different from Hello HQ today, because not everyone knows that alongside websites, design and all the usual digital stuff, I also do photographic restoration.

Mark got in touch with this old photograph of HMS Vanguard. The original had become heavily faded, with most of the colour, contrast and detail disappearing over time.

A few hours of careful restoration later, and this is the result.

The image has been rebuilt at high resolution and prepared at 300dpi, so Mark can now have it professionally printed at A2 size or larger without losing the detail we’ve brought back, and all turned around in less than 48 hours.

Mark's reaction when he first saw it:

“That looks well good Simon - thanks for a great job.”

I'll take that. 😁

So, there you go. If you've got an old photograph tucked away somewhere that's faded, damaged or simply isn't good enough quality to print anymore, that's something I can help with too.

There’s considerably more to launching a website than pressing a big imaginary GO LIVE button.

Mobile, forms, performance, search visibility and tracking all need checking first.

These are four of the basics we look at before a Hello HQ website goes out into the world.

When your customers are buying into a lifestyle, the website needs to sell more than the service.

Plymouth Marine Centre works in an industry where presentation matters enormously. Boats like this are big purchases, so the website has to do more than list specifications and contact details.

It needs to make people want to keep looking.

That means strong photography, clear navigation, well-structured information and a design that gives the boats themselves room to do the talking.

It’s the same principle we use across every website we build at Hello HQ.

Understand what the customer is actually buying, then design the website around that.

Sometimes that’s a service.

Sometimes it’s expertise.

And sometimes it looks a bit like this.

More website traffic sounds great.

But if the website itself isn’t converting visitors into calls, messages or enquiries, driving more people towards it can simply mean losing more people.

Sometimes the website needs fixing first.

What qualifications has your web designer actually got?

It’s a fair question.

Anyone can build a website. Anyone can call themselves a web designer. But when you’re trusting someone with your business, your data, your hosting and often a pretty important part of your livelihood, I think there should be a bit more behind it than “I’m good with WordPress”.

So, this reel is a little look at what sits behind Hello HQ.

And one thing I completely forgot to mention while filming it: Hello HQ also carries Professional Indemnity and Cyber Liability insurance.

Because qualifications matter.

But so do security, accountability and being properly set up to look after other people’s businesses.

Some websites need to feel calm and reassuring.

Others absolutely do not.

We built a website for three-time Speedway World Champion Tai Woffinden, and the brief was never going to be beige, corporate or restrained.

The site needed pace, impact and personality. It had to feel like Tai, not like a generic sports template with his name dropped into it.

That meant strong imagery, bold design and a structure that could handle everything from his story and career to commercial opportunities and fan engagement without losing that energy.

That’s the bit of web design we enjoy most.

Working out what makes a person or business different, then making sure the website actually reflects it.

A homepage isn’t there to contain every piece of information about your business.

Its first job is much simpler.

Tell people what you do, who it’s for, why they should trust you and what they should do next.

A website should feel like the business it represents.

We’re actually building a brand new website for Evolution Martial Arts right now, and that’s a big part of the thinking behind it.

This isn’t a business that should be represented by generic stock photography, vague marketing language and a template that could belong to anybody.

It needs energy, personality, real people, real training and real moments like this.

So the new site is being built around the reality of what Evolution Martial Arts actually does, with the structure, content and design all working together to give somebody a genuine feel for the place before they ever walk through the door.

That’s web design done properly.
