🗞️ Newspaper Fact of the Day

Did you know the Independent on Sunday printed its final edition nearly 10 years ago, on 20th March 2016?

After more than 25 years in print, the paper — along with The Independent daily edition — moved to being online only, marking a major moment in UK newspaper history and showing how reading habits have changed over time.

At Westcountry News Direct, we’re proud to still deliver physical newspapers to doorsteps every morning, keeping that traditional routine alive for customers who still enjoy their paper with a cup of tea or coffee ☕📰

Fact of the Day

On this day in 1878, Queen Victoria was given a demonstration of a new invention by Alexander Graham Bell — the telephone.

At the time, newspapers were how news travelled. Innovations like the telephone would soon change how journalists gathered information and shared stories, shaping the modern news industry.

Technology changes. Trusted news remains.

Fact of the Day

On this day in 1900
Guglielmo Marconi sent the first wireless radio signal across open sea, from Wales to England.

For UK newspapers, it was a turning point — news could travel faster than trains or ships, changing how quickly papers could be produced and delivered.
More than a century later, the same basics still matter: timing, reliability, and getting the news where it needs to be.

Message to All Our Customers
We’d like to thank all of our customers — including those we deliver to on behalf of Bargain Booze Plympton and Crownhill Post Office — for your patience and understanding with late deliveries this week.
These are, without doubt, the worst conditions we have faced in our 13 years in the industry.
Over the past week we’ve been dealing with:
Severe weather and widespread ice
Drivers injured after falls and currently off work
Vehicle issues caused by accidents and road conditions
Reduced staffing, meaning we have been one driver down on some days
On certain mornings, conditions mean some drops are not safe or physically possible at the usual time. In a small number of cases, access has not been possible until later in the day.
Please be assured:
All deliveries will be completed the same day wherever it is safe and possible to do so
Driver safety and customer property must come first
We are not skipping rounds or cutting corners
We understand how important routine and reliability are, and we don’t take delays lightly. Your continued support during this exceptionally difficult period is genuinely appreciated.
Thank you for bearing with us.

Road conditions are too dangerous; Plymouth City Council have not gritted for 2 days. At 7am after 2 drivers having a RTA and one driver in A&E after a fall down customer steps because they had no forethought to grit their own property, I took the decision to keep my driver's and their vehicles safe.

Deliveries will resume today when the roads are in a suitable condition.

Unlike our competitors who left the driver's out there who are now facing multiple days with a lack of resources.

Ours are safe and will continue in due course. I hope all our customers understand.

Regards

Darren

To all Customers of Westcountry News Direct. We have suspended today's deliveries due to unsafe conditions. We will resume as soon as I believe it is safe to do so. In my opinion none of our roads were gritted yesterday and by 7am, we had one driver in hospital and 2 in RTA's.

We will attempt delivery later today.

Regards

Darren
