In 2014, The Guardian reported on the publication of a report by the Plymouth Fairness Commission set up to help the people of Plymouth become genuinely involved in deciding and implementing the changes needed to help all its residents live in a fairer city.

Last year, the Plymouth Herald reported that the situation regarding children living in poverty has actually got worse, over the past ten years with a shocking 31% of children in Plymouth living below the breadline, up from 29% in 2014/15 and the highest figure in at least eight years.

And it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Find out how you can help care for for Plymouth's most vulnerable people.

Whether the knock-on impact of Dragons Den, The Apprentice and similar or the emergence of the “social media influencer”, digital marketer or side hustle, there’s no doubting the global and local rise of the entrepreneur.

So much so that last year NatWest Group reported that “just under one in three UK adults (30%) now either run their own business or plan to start a business within the next three years.”

But what about Plymouth? Where do we fit in in this entrepreneurial revolution?

Truth is, we’re doing pretty well.

Plymouth to Decide: Should We Have a Directly Elected Mayor?

Big decisions will be made about Plymouth’s future this summer, and your voice matters.

On Wednesday, 17 July 2025, Plymouth residents will go to the polls in a city-wide referendum to answer a single, historic question:

"Should Plymouth be governed by a directly elected mayor?"

The outcome of which could reshape the way Plymouth is led for decades to come.

A little over 12 hours since launching, and we've already passed the 50 subscriber mark.

Not only that, but we've gained 1 x founder subscriber, 2 x annual subscriptions and 1 x monthly subscriber

That's not bad for something that existed only as a nagging feeling just a couple of weeks ago and has been brought to life just this week.

What am I talking about?

Good news for Plymouth and GREAT news for Plymouth people, that's what.

WOW Plymouth exists for one reason and one reason only.

To spread the good news about everything great about living and working in Plymouth's FAVOURITE city (according to PwC Price Waterhouse Cooper)

The best news for me so far is knowing I'm not alone in thinking there's a need for it.

In the past 12 hours, I've had numerous people reach out to ask how they can get involved, and I'll be honest with you

I'm making this up as I go along 😂

But there is method in my madness

To prove that all it takes to start a movement and build a community is for one person to stand up and have a go.

If there's an appetite, everything else will follow

And so far, 50 people and the finances I've outlined above, let alone the DMs (including the leader of the council) would say there's very definitely an appetite for change.

Change from the old way of thinking and doing

No more clickbait

No more talking Plymouth down

No more glorifying crime figures, sensationalizing business failure but ignoring business success, or feeding people a diet of soap operas and scandal.

We will talk Plymouth up, we will focus on the opportunities that exist in this wonderful city, and we will encourage everybody to get involved in making Plymouth an even better place to live (PwC already voted it the top city in the UK last year, by the way)

That doesn't mean we'll ignore the downsides. Plymouth has huge problems, and we'll work tirelessly to address these. Politicians will be held to account but in a space that recognises effort for Plymouth rather than party.

Right now, it's in its early days. The signs are encouraging, but we need your help and support to really make a difference.

You can do that in a myriad of ways, from liking and following the page at WOW Plymouthto joining the WOW Plymouth Facebook group, or best of all, subscribing (free or paid) to our Substack newsletter at https://wowplymouth.substack.com/

And if you really want to get involved either as a content contributor or personal or business sponsor or partner, drop us a line right here on Facebook.

We can't wait to hear from you

Let's put the WOW into Plymouth together!
