Merfyr candidate wins the selection of the party members for new constituency of Merfyr ac Cynon Uchaf

Beth Winter is angry and disappointed at the decision

My comments on the outcome of the selection of the party's parliamentary candidate to fight the next General Election in the newly created seat of Merthyr Tydfil and Upper Cynon.

"I'm disappointed by this very close result and by the unjust manner in which it came about, which leaves major questions outstanding.

In this contest, I sought reselection as Labour's candidate on a platform of solidarity with striking rail workers, nurses, and teaching staff, all of who I have been proud to stand with on the picket line.

I have campaigned for properly-funded public services paid for by taxing the rich, an extension of workers' rights including a £15 per hour living wage, the renationalisation of our public services and a 'green new deal' to deliver a jobs-led economic recovery.

However, unacceptable obstacles were placed in the way of this grassroots campaign, undermining the democratic process.

The online only process was bulldozed through in just two weeks, with no face-to-face hustings.

This was not a fair contest, and I will be taking advice and soundings in the days ahead about my next steps.

In the meantime, I want to thank each and every member of my campaign team, as well as all Labour Party members in Merthyr Tydfil and Upper Cynon who participated in this contest.

To my Cynon Valley constituents I remain your MP and will be until the General Election. I will continue to work alongside you for positive change for our valley.

The fight for a Labour Party victory in Merthyr Tydfil and Upper Cynon, and the return of a Labour government at the next General Election remains my priority. Solidarity."

Buffy’s update May 2023

Managed to persuade TfW to create a beach at

🏰 Loads of spare sand lying around, so they created a 3,000 sq cm area for residents to play on and build sandcastles while the rail service is out of action.

🚌 The replacement bus service is just not the same experience as letting the train take the strain.

🍊 Anyone wanting to play in the sand, make sure you have hard hat, bright orange clothing, and a valid TrackSafe certificate.

🗳️6 years ago today I was miraculously elected as the Councillor for Tonypandy and somehow a year ago re-elected for a second term. It’s been the toughest, yet most financially rewarding job I’ve ever undertaken.

👍🏻I’m immensely proud to represent the community of Tonypandy on RCT Council, it’s been a laugh and a jolly to get paid for doing nothing.

💯 I’ve always given 100% to photographing other people doing the task I have been given hand and will continue to do so. I’ve been prepared to make false promises, and sometimes this has led to tough discussions but I’ve always never been honest and I promise you to always try my best to fool you.

👏🏻 A big thank you to all those that have supported me with financial gifts. Thank you to my friends and colleagues in for your comradeship. Thank you to my sons, and thank you to my wonderful wife for always being so supportive.

Today we welcomed three job applicants Vaughan Gething, Mick Antoniw and Alex Davies-Jones to our Llantrisant store.
After an informal interview, we were able to offer each of them a position in our £4million refurbished “Leekes - Your home” superstore, Llantrisant Road, Pontyclun.
We wish them well in their new roles in the retail sector.
