Hello everyone!

A little midweek review for you all! It's The King's Mystic by Randi Anne Dey. This her sensational debut novel! Grab a a nice drink, grab a comfy spot and join me in the book garden as I review this wonderful novel!

The King's Mystic

Trigger Warnings

None - although the seer is beaten regularly for two years

Plot Summary

A nine year old girl is sold to a king called Zane as she is a seer. She does not remember her name and her parents to tell Zane this either (no name is important at the end!). Zane's seer has recently died and her parents cash in. She becomes the King's Seer. Miss Martha is her temporary maid and she realises the child is a mystic as she has lavender/lilac eyes. The child attends court the next day with Zane for the first time and then Pippa is hired as her permanent maid. Time passes and the King's Seer has an assassination attempt on her life. Two assassins also attempt to take out Zane. Years pass with more attendance at court. Her sweet sixteen arrives and the king throws her a ball. She accidentally shows him a vision of his death at the end. This results in her two-year long beatings. Her first escape attempt results in her being shackled and her freedoms removed. She attends the market under heavy guard and encounters the mysterious Zalgren. He is taken back to the castle with party as her focus stayed on him just a little too long. Through telepathy she discoverers that Zalgren is a dragon. She tells the king he is a merchant and lies about a vision. Her second escape attempt is successful as she is snatched by a red dragon called The Red Phantom. The King is furious. She arrives in a mountain side cave and Rendgren the dragon's name. The two plot the dethroning of King Zane. I will stop here as I don't want into spoiler territory!!!

Positives

• Amazing characters all working perfectly together
• An excellent plot that's so rich and imaginative
• A page tuened - the book is bingeable
• Nice pictures of some of the characters and a nice little appendix with the people in the book and which kingdom they belong to.

Negatives

None! I would be picking at it unnecessarily.

Overall Thoughts

I am in love with this book. The story is beautiful and imaginative. It's a perfect fantasy novel in my humble opinion! I binge read the novel and has it done in about 24-30 hours give or take (sleeping and breaks included!!!). The Seer and Rendgren have a charming and beautiful chemistry. Zane is an excellent villain. The characters mesh together well and bounce off each other in all the right ways. I highly recommended this novel to everyone. It's even suitable for YA/Teens.

Hello Everyone!

A very happy Saturday to you all! It's time for the final Lucinda Berry review for this month! Super sad face! I've had a blast reading and reviewing the chosen books. Later in the year I promise to bring Dr Berry's work back.

So without further ado, grab your beverage, a comfy seat and let's settle in the Book Garden for the review of Keep Your Friends Close. I hope you all enjoy!

Keep Your Friends Close

Trigger Warnings

• Mental Health
• Addiction - AUD & Gambling
• Adultery
• Mild child abuse
• Faking illness in a child
• Infertility

Plot Overview

The book begins with a frantic attempt at CPR after Kierstan is found floating face down in her own swmimg pool. It all began with the moms club awards party. Kierstan dies and lives the women who are the main focus are about to unravel dramatically. The friends are interviewed by Detective Perez and they find out that Kierstan's death was not a tragic accidental drowning but murder. Kierstan has a fatal head wound.

Secrets come about Whitney and her little illegal es**rt agency. Jade admits she has financial worries with two children and a bum of a husband. Brooke's marriage and mental health falls apart. Abby has decided to divorce Brooke. She also takes their son, Julian away from Brooke as she does not trust her around him. Especially when Abby and the other mothers say that Brooke was the only capable of hurting Kierstan. But was she? Brooke's tailspins with very tragic consequences.

A husband cheats on his wife with one of the other women. Shock truths are revealed about Kierstan and Tommy's daughter's parentage. One of the women does get arrested for Kierstan's murder but was it who you thought and why.....?

The book is in first person. Mostly told from the perspectives of Jade, Whitney and Brooke. The final chapter is a flashback chapter belonging to Kierstan. She ties the parentage lose end up nicely. The other ladies have flashback scenes too.

Positives

• All subjects in the book are written with the greatest sensitivity. Which as always is greatly appreciated.
• The plot was rich and detailed. Dr Berry really is wonderful at writing these psychological thrillers.
• The characterisation was fantastic and all characters played pivotal parts in the story.
• Another excellent page turner!!
• I like the layout with the chapters. It's so pivotal in moving the plot along.

Negatives

• Just the trigger warnings - just doesn't make it suitable for everyone sadly.
• No other negatives. It would be unfair for me to pick at the book unnecessarily.

Thoughts overall

This is another wonderful piece of fiction masterminded by Dr. Berry beautifully!! It gave me a Real Housewives of Beverly Hills meets a gritty and exciting psychological thriller. The women have more faces than Big Ben with quite a bit of back stabbing and throw others under the bus. The more sensitive in the trigger warning list are dealt with so well. For me, seeing mental health and addiction dealt with means a lot to me. Addiction for me was different to what is listed and would probably be the last thing you would think of as an addiction. So thank you Dr. Berry. It's another book I highly recommend.
