We're back with Mix Note Monday after a busy few weeks behind the scenes!!

When wanting to create a build for a drop or a sweeping transition between chorus and verse (or vice versa) utilising a white noise generator and an automated filter sweep is a great method.

Simply get up your ES P synth, set the waveform to noise, set full frequency and full resonance, along with altering the attack and release to fit, and set full sustain and decay. This should give you a synth that cuts in suddenly and has a realistic release.

Following this, play in the note that you want to build (ideally the root note), add the channel eq to the track, and set up automation in the channel EQ menu (high cut frequency).

Mix Note Monday!!!

Kick drum replacement is a great way of bringing out more in your kick drum. Your original kick lacking in slap or low end? Simply double the track, set one track to midi replacement and pick a sample that suits what you need to fill in. Then set and eq to eliminate everything other than either the slap or low end you want and play both tracks simultaneously.

Now that things can open up a bit more, we’d like to offer our studio to solo artists and acoustic acts for a 1-hour “get to know us” session. You’ll be in with Ben, with full access to the studio. You can have a coffee and a chat, or start working on a song. But we want to get to know you, and get to know our fellow creatives. If this seems like something that interests you, drop us, Ben or Jordan a DM.

Mix Note Monday!!

Another thing to try is to split the way you process bass. This allows more control of the sub and the lower bass, and at the same time allowing to perfect the bass highs to give growl, or any effect.

The way you do this is by copying your bass take onto another track, having a low pass filter up to 200hz (or thereabouts) to give the low side, and a high pass filter 200hz and up for the high. Then put them together into a bus at the volume ratio you want, and you have a split processed bass take that allows you to have control both over the highs and mids, and the lows together and separately. You could then even combine this with last week's tip to glue the bass and drums together.

Hi everyone!! Jordan here, with our first Mix Note Monday! Mix Note Monday is our way of showing you a brief example of methods we use whilst mixing and mastering, and to help you guys create your own perfect mixes! Feel free to show us how you like to use each technique, if you have used it at all before, or any techniques you'd like showcased!

Parallel Compression

New York Compression, aka parallel compression, allows you to create a glued mix and/or rhythm section by simply adding a compressor onto a separate bus, and adding to taste.

I find that adding a blended mix of dry drums and the wet parallel can bring the much needed energy and reinforcement, however push it too far the other way and you can get fizzy cymbals and a muddy low end. As normal with any music making, use your ears and fit to taste.
