What a fantastic legacy. A piece of is on the move. Its destination is Solent Gateway, where the bridge will undergo cleaning and preservation to protect its structure and historical integrity.

Once restored, the bridge will be placed outside the port in Marchwood acting as a gate guardian, making it accessible to the general public for the first time.

Another bit of WW2 concrete hidden in plain sight. The main road (Lepe Rd)to Lepe country park Hampshire, UK has a number of extended laybys/ passing places/marshalling areas leading to the Camp and Embarkation Hards and camp on the Lepe coast. The single track access road to The Lepe Embarkation off Stanswood Rd Hard is not accessible but can be seen on Google maps with passing places.

Many roads were also widened to help with additional traffic movements. Check out the marshalling Camp and Embarkation info on the website. Link in bio.

Discovered a new Memorial at former HMS Daedalus yesterday. Unveiled in June the Daedalus Commemorative Stone is dedicated to the service and civilian personnel who served, fought and in some cases died at the Royal Naval Air Station between 1939-1996.

A short ceremony preceded the unveiling with Vice Admiral Duncan Potts sharing some of the history of the site. Established in 1917 as a Naval Seaplane Training School, Daedalus has been part of the local communities of Fareham, Lee-on-the-Solent and Gosport for more than a century. The stone was then blessed by RNA Padre, Reverend Liz Quinn.

In June 1944, the airfield flew 435 sorties associated with Overlord (D-Day), said to be the largest number from any airfield in the UK.

Royal Naval Association's President, Vice Admiral Duncan Potts CB RN Rtd, said: “Anyone looking around will see how quickly Daedalus is changing and developing, with numerous commercial enterprises, higher education and Coast Guard operations on site. This regeneration is really a community success story. But with the old Daedalus disappearing, it’s timely to commemorate the history of the site. This commemorative stone is dedicated to those that served and worked here from the service and the community, and importantly allows future generations to understand the important part of our history and defence that the Naval Air Station provided for so many years.”

substack piece led me to contrast my own experiences of Commando Comics and war games of the 1960s with Adam's experience.

Memories were still relatively fresh and our English teacher even took us to the pictures to see Battle of Britain. Now that WW2 is covered at Schools I hope teachers can begin to explore the heroism and ingenuity of the young men and women before making a judgement on comics films and video games that may just be founded, albeit loosely, in fact.

We say thank you to Alan, all those who didn't make it to the end of the war and all those who suffered from injuries and the effects of conflict. We must always remember them and never take our freedom for granted.

Our thanks and condolences to Alan's family.

1 of 5: This series looks at PLUTO (Pipeline Under The Ocean) part of the D-Day Engineering Story.

The technology was based on an undersea telegraph cable lined with lead (HAIS), shown in image. Due to the cost of Lead Bernard J. Ellis, the chief engineer of the Burmah Oil Company, was convinced that a flexible pipeline could be built from mild steel (HAMEL).
