We are kicking off the first of 2021s ‘Meet the Talent Monday’ with multi-skilled Audiophile and Master of his own facility - Andrew Swallow.

Looking at his recent credits (‘Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild’, Our Yorkshire Farm’, ‘Ben Fogle - Return to the Wild’) you’d think Andrew was a specialist in outdoor Obs Docs, but you’d be wrong he has mixed everything from Car Series’ (‘Worlds Most Dangerous Roads’, ‘Car SOS’ ‘Classic Car Show’) to Foodie series’ (‘Come dine with me’) to Sport Bio-pic films (My name is Lenny - Tracklayer) to Music docs (Bowie, Prince & Music Legends We Lost In 2016), there appears to be no subject he hasn’t covered.

His skills aren’t limited to the mixing desk, he is an Audiophile through and through and has built his own Dolby Atmos mix room and booth. Check out the article https://bit.ly/3cuxdR9 detailing the upgrade of his dubbing suite to to full Dolby Atmos capability.
Andrew has long offered fantastic remote dubbing options so the Covid curve-ball didn’t throw him off his game during lockdown, leaving little time to enjoy his pastimes - movies, cycling, and writing music.

It can feel very lonely ‘working’ or ‘not working’ from home during a lockdown.
It’s very easy to feel the world keeps turning and you are left behind. In lots of cases the cameras have stopped rolling again and the feeling of isolation within our industry is ever present.
If you’re already a member spread, the word about the Hound Dog Post community to your work pals, clients and former colleagues as it may well be the connection you or they need to get the ball rolling again.
We chose to avoid the hollow ‘Happy New Year’ greeting as further lockdown has compounded the difficulties faced in Production and Post Production. Instead we are resolute in helping the Hound Dog Post community and won’t be instating any form of admin fee for current or new listings until April this year. At the moment it’s more important we raise awareness of Hound Dog Post in the hopes of a busy and creative new year for TV and film talent.

This will be our last ‘Meet the Talent Monday’ for this year and we are going out on a high with the exceptionally talented Rick Aplin BFE. He also offers us a retrospective in his own words of the challenges faced by our industry in 2020.

Always fascinated by the idea of a career in TV, he had aspirations of becoming a Sound Recordist with the BBC, but a degree in graphic design and photography took him on an alternative route to an independent production company making programmes for a newly established Channel 4, it was here that Rick’s interest in editing was ignited and he hasn’t looked back since.

Within five years of becoming a freelance Editor, Rick had cut a major ITV prime time documentary series and a BAFTA winning Channel 4 arts show. Swipe left for just a handful of projects from the enormity of his portfolio.

Rick has been on a non-stop trajectory in excess of 30 years. That is until this year…2020.

“The challenges to our industry during this terrible pandemic have been monumental. Many have been lucky to be able to work, and many more have been left in financial desperation. At least the enforced break gave me a couple of months in which to pursue my love of photography and music and enjoy the summer weather.

The concept of remote editing has been a lifeline, despite the limitations of broadband and housing a home edit suite! ...And so, the work that dried up so suddenly in April has gradually started to trickle back, and hopefully the editing community will soon be busier than ever. But I feel strongly that the changes that have been forced upon us shouldn’t mean that we are obliged to accept a lessening of respect for our craft, as the role of the Editor has never been as important, and our skills never more in demand than they are now”.

On today’s ‘Meet the Talent Monday’ we are delighted to meet Philip Moroz - Master of Sound Design and Creation!

Growing up performing and recording music, specialising in drums and percussion, Philip beats to the sound of his own drum and is driven by two very worthy aims:

a) to work on incredible film and television projects ✔️recent credits include Killing Eve, Downton Abbey, Mum, Cold Feet, Breeders.

b) to be kind and help improve the world for everyone, bit by bit ✔️ Philip’s interest and motivation in the transition towards a clean and sustainable future, sees him planting trees in local, urban areas 🌳He loves learning about time and space, electric vehicles and renewable energy.

On top of these Attenborough (Richard & David) worthy endeavours, I’m also going to add another:

c) to innovate & invent ✔️ Philip captures and creates new sounds within a project he co-founded called ‘Noise Creations’. He’s also created & marketed a device called ‘COUPLA’ it attaches a mic rig temporarily and swiftly onto a recording bag whilst out and about recording.

Fascinated with audio post production, he massively enjoys all parts of the process; nowadays he specialises in dialogue editing and sound effects editing for film and television. He also undertakes a broad array of video production and advertising projects, including the entire sound edit and mix.

The slide show speaks for itself and this is just part of his portfolio for the past two years. We look forward to the release of new film ‘Barbarians’ featuring Iwan Rheon, Will Kemp, Tom Cullen and directed by Charles Dorfman. Philip is the Dialogue Editor on this movie.

So for today’s ‘Meet the Talent Monday’ we meet the very modest Joe Marcus...

“I had a lucky start”, says veteran editor Joe. Aged thirteen, he began syncing up rushes for his father, twice Oscar nominated Irish documentary film director, Louis Marcus (first image).

“Honestly, I just did it for pocket money, I wanted to be a record producer.”

But aged fifteen, Joe started at Windmill Lane Studios, Ireland’s first post house.
“In 1984, it was 1” tape and Telecine suites, working on film, television and music promos. I guess that’s what sucked me in.”

A move to London in 1988 aged nineteen, Joe began cutting news and current affairs for foreign broadcasters.

” I worked with a lot of great journalists from around the world and learnt a lot. Discovering the storytelling aspect of the process is really what made me want a career in editing, though music was never far behind.”

Returning home to Dublin in 1990, Joe worked for all the major post houses before going freelance in 1991.

“I’d spend days in the edit and nights playing in bands and recording in studios. A few career highlights include editing with Jim Sheridan on “Into The West”, cutting concerts for the Beach Boys and Fun Lovin’ Criminals, editing Panorama, as well as writing and directing my own series for the BBC.”

“Over the years, I’ve kept up and extended my skills across sound-mixing, grading and on-lining, so I’m able to do very good deals for producers if they’re not already tied in to post elsewhere.”

Of this year Joe writes,
“The pandemic has been crazy for all and devastating for many, so I’m extremely lucky to have been working remotely the whole year on network productions.

Apart from writing and recording music, Joe spends his spare time, swimming, reading and walking the dog (Pablo), with his wife and two kids, where they live in rural County Down.

So on today’s ‘Meet the Talent Monday’ is a little puzzler…what ties all of these pictures together? Yes, Av Bains has an undeniable and exceptionally uncanny resemblance to Jeff Goldblum and the other is….Emmy’s, of which Av has been awarded not just one, but two! Tbh, Jeff was only nominated for two, but we won’t split hairs over their Hollywood kudos.

So, apart from their award-winning Hollywood cachet, Av just can’t shake off his doppelgänger status to Jeff Goldblum, it goes way back to his early days at Framestore. He remembers being in his suite and Independence Day was playing on the TV whilst the engineer was fixing the Flame, the Engineer took a glance at the screen, double-took Av, chuckled to himself and then called in his colleagues to share his amusement.

Jeff Goldblum aside, Av’s credentials speak for themselves. BBC trained and 20 years at Framestore, Av has worked on many groundbreaking visual effects projects such as ‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ and the modern day ‘James Bond’ Title sequences, plus he’s won two Emmys for his work on ‘Merlin’ & ‘Alice In Wonderland’.

As well as working on long form projects and commercials, he has worked on feature films such as ‘Harry Brown’, 'Four Lions’ & ‘The Golden Compass’.

Nowadays, he works in Soho or remotely from his office, where he freelances as a VFX Supervisor & Flame Artist using Autodesk Flame, the ultimate 3D, VFX, finishing, and colour grading tool.

He lives in Bath with with his family and two cats, one of whom thinks it's a dog (which we love). Splitting his time between London and Bristol he has captured some beautiful images (see slides).

This week’s ‘Meet the Talent’ is the lovely Russell Gough, he tells his own story and it’s very lovely to hear…

I’ve been a freelance video editor since 2011 and previous to that worked in-house for various production companies. I work on a wide range of genres including TV commercials, online promos, film and long-form TV. Since lockdown I’ve mainly been working from my home office with a great deal of footage being sent to me on hard drives or as downloadable content. I’ve always enjoyed being able to go into a clients office and work with them there but I have to say that working from home has been great. Lockdown has pushed everything forward and proven that most jobs can be done remotely. I have two young sons, so the flexibility of WFH has been fantastic.
When lockdown first kicked in I found that work ground to a halt but the confidence in filming seems to be picking up and work has been steadily coming back. I’ve recently worked with brands such as Betfred, Liverpool FC and a new sports startup called Riixo. The Riixo job came through Hounddog Post and has turned into multiple jobs for them. It’s been great to have a post-production community that actually works.

Outside of paid work I’m part of a filmmaking collective called the 'Manchester Independent Collective'. There’s a core 4 members and every now and then we try to get together and make films, utilising friends and other freelancers where needed. The projects are all ultra low budget but we do it for the love of the creative process. We’ve made one feature length film, plus I’m just finishing the edit on our third short, which should be available to view in the next few weeks.
To get me away from my desk I love to do a bit of woodwork and restoration. There’s something very satisfying about it and to have a complete change of pace from editing.

I’m very grateful for the freelance career I’ve had so far, every job is different and brings its own challenges, plus I’ve met some fantastic people.
I think some of my most memorable recent projects have been ‘Jaguar XKSS - A Supercar Is Reborn’ for Channel 4 and ’The FA People Cup’ for BBC Sport. Both were fast paced edits with some really interesting stories to tell. I have to say that telling stories has to be the main joy I get from editing. Fingers crossed it carries on for many years to come.

A little nostalgia for a Sunday evening….

The BBC made it’s first official broadcast from Broadcasting House in London on 15 May, 1932.📻🎙🕰

BH was hailed as an architectural and technical triumph. There were 800 doors, 6500 electrical lamps, 98 clocks (all synchronized to the new control room), 22 studios, 142 miles of broadcast circuit wiring. Oh, and 840 radiators and some rather nifty hydraulic lifts!
It's 'the new Tower of London' trumpeted the Architectural Review, others likened it to the brain centre of the modern civilization, a new Babel tower, and a resplendent cruise liner cresting the wave of Regent Street.
Some years later, writer George Orwell was less complimentary, defining Broadcasting House as a cross between a lunatic asylum and a girls' public school! That aside we think it was a feat of modern design and check out that bespoke mixing desk!

Meet the Talent Monday - ‘The Bridge’ Special.

As another level of Covid restrictions looms on what is a very drizzly first Monday of November, it’s easy to forget to celebrate the achievements of what a group of people can accomplish from their homes in challenging times.

A huge team were involved, with Editors and Producers working remotely from their homes and across three continents 🌎🏘It wasn’t always a walk in the park, but people adapted and new working practices evolved that will transform the way we work in the future.

Rick Murray, MD of Workerbee & Exec Producer of ‘The Bridge’ said of his recent experience, “Working remotely has opened up a whole new world for us, we can work with any freelancer, anywhere in the globe meaning that any creative collaboration is possible. This has changed the way we work forever.”

‘The Bridge’ was in production before Hound Dog Post was launched, but we do have some Hound Dog members on the team who have been at the forefront of remote-working. We applaud them and the rest of the team!👏👏👏
