Kytinous Games

Kytinous Games Kytinous Games Limited is an independent publisher of roleplaying and boardgames. Gather your friends, grab your dice and rediscover planet Earth.

Ancient, long-forgotten civilisations lie in ruin, mighty castles rise from the plains, hewn from thousand-feet tall termite mounds captured by force hundreds of years ago, and giant mutant insects feast at the head of the food chain. In this new world, insects have long been the dominant life form. They have evolved into fearsome monsters, their vast bulks crushing field, forest and foe. The clim

ate has changed exponentially, presenting greater degrees of extreme weather and even the most northern lands expect tropical storms between harsh winters. Vegetation is rife and plant life abundant. Trees grow to immense size and the vast forests are jungle-like, in which both flora and fauna present great danger. Choose one of four new forms of being as your in-game avatar, join one of sixteen guilds or forge your own career path, and make life or death decisions not only for yourself but the entire gameworld! Your player-character may rise from the gutters, or descend from lofty noble quarters, as they encounter - just as you will - the perilous world beyond their place of origin. Be it as a merchant risking the road for profit, a courier tasked with a remote delivery, a scholar rediscovering failed proto-civilisations in the depths of a jungle-like forest or the heart of a poison-scoured wasteland; the scope for adventure is as bountiful as the rewards of a succesful scorpion-hunt! Tales of the Kytin Age is a low fantasy, sci-fi adventure; there are no magic spells, no gods, and certainly no dragons. Instead, the world presents a swarm of arthropidic adversaries guaranteed to send shivers down any mutants' altered spine! TotKA has been written and designed by Geoff Gray, a lifelong gamer now too old to admit how long 'lifelong gamer' actually means. Creating a bespoke rule system carefully built around this novel setting over a 35 year period, he is thrilled to finally bring his dream project to market. Geoff is very much a 'beer and pretzels' kind of player, disliking game systems where fun and immersion are hidden (or 'obfuscated') behind overly complicated rules and superfluous details. Unlike many other games, role-players benefit from having just enough rules to actually play. Where detail is most appreciated is in the lore, the story of the setting, the who'se who and the whats' where. Despite having a comprehensive set of combat and skill options during play, the underlying mechanics are clean and intuitive. Where Tales of the Kytin Age truly shines, however, is the setting itself; The core gamebook would be best considered an encyclopedia rather than a technical rules manual. The slow but steady recovery of the human race after millenia skulking under clouds of toxic residue, the many plants and trees that have flourished in the new biome, and, of course, the chitinous-clad creatures that have replaced all other life and now dominate the shattered earth. It is these concepts and how they are portrayed that really make this title a 'must-play', and they are passionately described alongside a wealth of beautiful, full colour illustrations. A veteran of the genre, having worked with some of the most succesful IP's in the hobby, talented Bulgarian artist, Yasen Stoilov joins Geoff in bringing this unique gameworld to life. With many years' experience illustrating RPG's and boardgames, in addition to movies and video game development, Yasen has embraced the weird and wonderful denizens and locales of the Kytin Age, and perfectly showcases his vibrant individual style over 130+ original pieces. The developers have endeavoured to bring their players a product jam-packed with glorious content, from copious player aids for the DM (or 'Hivekeeper' in this case), to examples of play, fast NPC creation, and enough man-eating bugs, plants, brigands, and natural hazards to keep even the most heroic of adventurers on their toes/claws/wings for many, many play sessions. And that's not all. Post-launch product support is already well-underway. The first official adventure supplement continues the story begun in 'The Ing Sagas; Ribvale' (included with the core gamebook), and episodic travelogues will describe the kingdoms of Franzia, the main location for campaign play, on a region-by-region basis. A range of tabletop miniatures simply await manufacture, and accessories such as custom dice, floorplan/environment punchboards, cardboard playing pieces, and more will be available for our more enthusiastic players to enjoy. The game is ready to go to press. Unless an act of god (or, more likely, that of a human) raises an issue, there will be minimal delay in fulfilment. We hope you'll join us in making Tales of the Kytin Age a huge success as we eagerly await the Kickstarter launch. Time does indeed fly faster than a buzzfly on a sugar rush. It only seems last week that our Kickstarter backers began receiving their rewards, just days after the printed games arrived in the warehouse. GMS, our distributor, did a tremendous job with fulfilment, helping us clear our requirement that forbade retail sales before our backers got their games first. After some initial problems with the digital download access (issues solved within a couple of days I am pleased to add), everyone that supported the project and made the first printing possible has been able to claim their dues.

As a first-time Kickstarter creator, I like to think everything went pretty damn well all things considered; we hit our minimum target and pulled off a successful campaign. Backers received their items within a reasonable time, as hoped. Having used KS myself, I didn't want our backers to experience the delays or broken promises when it came to fulfilment that, unfortunately, afflict quite a few similar projects. Standart did an amazing job, the printing and finishing of the books is incredibly good quality, and GMS proved a godsend, helping me navigate the latter stages of the project with fast email replies and some solid advice. Thanks guys!

Future Kickstarters will be much easier to organise and manage after this initial run at it, which is good because there is exciting new stuff to come. We have a miniature line, with four forms of being already sculpted, that requires crowd-funding in order to get on our players tables and the next official adventure book, The Ing Sagas: Bluecliff, is planned for the latter quarter of this year (with a free playable preview available via our forum).

UKGE

The last days of May are a great time for gamers, especially those from the UK, as the annual UK Games Expo opens its doors at the Birmingham NEC for three days of gaming, buying, selling and discovering new stuff! Having vowed to make an appearance as an Exhibitor at some point, it was a dream come true to attend the event with Tales of the Kytin Age. Hot off the press, we sold a good number of both Deluxe and Standard editions, hopefully making many new Hivekeepers in the process.

The response to the games' debut was positive and very encouraging. If any of our Expo customers are reading this - thank you for taking the plunge and buying into this new IP. From the emails I have received since the show, the game seems to be delivering on its rather high promise of being accessible for new players in a rich, detailed, immersive setting, but please let us know what you think via our new forum.

I was planning to add EXPO customer emails to our newsletter subscriber list myself, but this is not an option. So, please sign up in order to receive news and updates for all things kytinous if you purchased anything from our stand.

The UKGE days flew by, as I was on my feet 95% of the time and talking so much I was hoarse by the end of each day! Attending, building and manning the exhibition stand solo, I was relieved a few times throughout the long days by members of my local gaming group. They supplied coffee and pastries and - most importantly - enabled a few much-needed toilet breaks! My sincere thanks go to my friends at the Ribble Valley Gamers Guild for providing such stalwart assists.

Official Forum

It has always been the intent to establish a place where players of TotKA can communicate directly with myself, the creator and author of the title, and each other to maintain a genuine community of like-minded role-players and Hivekeepers. The forum allows our players to share ideas, fiction and any other TotKA related content. Rules questions and lore information can be discussed.

Upon returning from the Expo, preparations for this long-awaited player-creator forum were completed and the site is now live! Though yet in its larval stage, awaiting more content, your presence (and content) would be most welcome.

Until next time, sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite!

Best,
Geoff

Our new player to creator forum is up! It's still very early days, and with a TON of content to come, but if you have bought or intend to purchase or play TotKA, you could do worse than joining our new forum, the 'Laughing Locust'!

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, and before our debut at the UK Games Expo this year, backers will be receiving their physical and digital rewards. The printed versions of Tales of the Kytin Age are complete and will be leaving the factory shortly in preparation for world-wide distribution. We have been urged to extend our PM closing date for a few more days, giving interested parties an opportunity to get hold of the game at the earliest opportunity.

The Pledge Manager for TotKA will close on Friday 18th April.

Happy Christmas!

Season's Greetings and best wishes to all for the Big Day tomorrow and the coming New Year. Let's hope 2025 sees peace on earth and goodwill to all (that WAS the plan, wasn't it?), but if not, at least a few good games.

Ever eager to restore some faith in humanity, our mutated descendants of the Kytin Age are holding fast, harnessing their Daily Cell Activity until their time comes to take flight and announce themselves Q2 2025. They are buzzing for it!

Our deepest thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last few months: Our Backers on Kickstarter, you awesome folks' here on Facebook, and - of course - our families and loved ones who have allowed us the time and space to work on the game while they dash around like headless houseflies doing the Christmas shop and fending off visitors, well-wishers and distant relations.

Be well, be kind, be vigilant, behave!

Best, Geoff

We did it!

As I am sure most of you are aware by now that with your help we met and surpassed our funding goal! So many, many thanks from myself and Yasen for enabling us to move forward on delivering this epic adventure game.

We'll keep backers updated via the campaign's comments section in addition to posting anything new/cool/weird here. For now, we're gonna take a deep breath before diving into the last-minute checks and improvements of the manuscripts and art.

The next update will likely be notice of the Pledge Manager opening, so stay tuned.

Thanks again all and speak to you soon!

Best,
Geoff

For the followers who have yet to pledge support, a last minute call to arms!

Last few days - pledge your support and join us in the perilous Age of Kytin!

Tales of the Kytin Age is a brand new TTRPG designed for sandbox, campaign play. Set in the distant future, planet Earth has become host to the Great Insects: giant, mutated creatures that dominate the land, air and sea. Mankind has spent millennia skulking in the ruins of our long-dead civilisation, but after the Great Insect Wars, currently enjoy a ‘golden age’ of rising prosperity and a higher chance of survival. Towns and cities are formidable in their defence against the huge monsters that prowl field, forest and desolate wasteland.

Beyond these protected urban centres, it is every person for themselves. Daring travellers join long caravans of protected wagons as they move from place to place, merchants, scholars and craftsfolk among them. Intrepid explorers band together to push the boundaries of human knowledge, investigating the ruins and remains of many fallen or failed proto-civilisations. And, as always, brigands and bandits pose an additional threat to their fellow folk.

A rich and detailed character creation system teaches the basic rules of the game, provides instant character-orientated goals, and readies players for the perils they will encounter. Simple, yet gritty and deadly mechanics provide an intuitive, tactical combat system, and a single, fundamental rule covers combat, skill and ability use with only a few exceptions.

Embracing the design sensibilities of 70’s and 80’s RPG’s, but with a lick of modern paint and stunning, full colour artwork, Tales of the Kytin Age is gloriously ambitious title destined to receive multiple expansions, adventure supplements and even a line of custom miniatures.

With only a few short days remaining on its debut Kickstarter campaign, now is the time to lighten your ky-strip and invest in this exciting, independently published RPG. The result of over 30 year’s development, including 6 dedicated to visual world-building, this is no ‘flash-in-the-pan’ affair, and the Kickstarter offers everything required to jump into the Kytin Age at the beginning of its published life-cycle.

We’re fully funded but copies of the game are limited and the Kickstarter allows more than a 10% discount on the Deluxe Edition’s RRP. Backers will receive their copies before general sale begins and also have their name featured in the Core Game Book!

And... SECOND interview of the day. This one was TEXT only, so I felt rather more at home. And they asked some pretty great questions about the system and some of the lore. I even worked out a way to get some of Yasen's art in there too :)

Note for readers: You may notice some delay in answers to certain questions, where a newer question is answered before an elder. There was a delay similar to 'lag' (if you're old enough to know whatt that is), and also some questions were asked before I got a chance to answer an earlier one.

and, of course, if you have yet to make YOUR pledge, please consider doing so today, thank you :) x

1st interview of the day with Mildra the Monk!

I've just come off a Discord conversation with gaming guru, player and creator, 'Mildra the Monk', talking all things TotKA. I've not been involved in an interview before and I was very nervous, as usual, and I don't think my Lancastrian accent does me any favours either.

Still, it was amazing to be invited to share some info and Mildra proved a lovely host, preparing well and asking some cool questions.

For those interested, the interview can be heard here:

Would you like to know more? Please comment away below. Interview techniques greatly appreciated! ;)
