I think this video fully captures the essense of summer barbel fishing. If you put in the hard yards and find fish, there are likely to be lots of them. It's not all about finding the first comfortable swim and throwing lots of bait in! My guided days are initially all about river craft and observing feeding and habitat, then hopefully slipping a few fish over the net.

After the recent flood and water clearing, pike were on the feed. This one caught on a lure and put up a great show of itself.

These are made with HD wire and fitted with specialist hooks and rings to withstand the numerous toothy fish that just destroy a standard Mepps lure. The Payara (Vampire fish) in Guyana's Essequibo River are commonly caught to over 20lb. On light gear they are amazing sport and provide a memorable photo opportunity.

Today's Freaky Fish Friday pays respect to those close-call moments where you're just a chomp or lodged-hook away from a disaster ready to derail even the best fishing day.

You can see from the span of this vampire fish's wide mouth compared to the size of my face (and the look on my face!) that it was a delicate situation. In the end, I did not end up with puncture wounds and this fish was released to target better suited prey.

We came across this huge Anaconda that we originally thought may be dead. Not having the courage to give it a poke we removed the hook from our rig and tossed the weight towards it. We quickly found out that this 20+ foot leviathon was just resting!

With heavy rain and more water in the river, it could signal the end of wading for the remainder of the year. Looking forward to some autumn barbel and big river Wye pike over the coming months. Please follow the page if you are interested in a day out or just curious to see what we catch.

Lots of people have been asking about the profile picture on the Brockhampton Fishery page. It was a fish caught by Anietra Hamper - Three Word Press on a recent visit from the US. It weighed in at 11lb 6oz and for all the doubters out there I've posted a juggling photo that clearly shows the girth on this amazing fish.
Well done Anietra and we welcome more visitors from across the pond to catch these beautiful hard fighting fish.
