On September 9, 1982, Rush released their ninth studio album ‘Signals’

The album marked a significant step in the band's evolution, incorporating a greater use of synthesizers and electronic elements while maintaining the progressive rock sound that defined their career. Featuring fan favorites such as “Subdivisions,” “The Analog Kid,” and “New World Man,” Signals became one of the band's most celebrated releases.

September 8, 1979: Led Zeppelin Debuted at #1 with In Through the Out Door

On September 8, 1979, In Through the Out Door entered the UK Albums Chart directly at #1, another remarkable achievement for Led Zeppelin as the 1970s approached their end.

The album represented a noticeable evolution in the band’s sound. John Paul Jones’ keyboards and synthesizers became increasingly prominent alongside Jimmy Page’s guitar, Robert Plant’s vocals and John Bonham’s unmistakable drumming. “In the Evening,” “Fool in the Rain,” “All My Love,” “Carouselambra” and “I’m Gonna Crawl” showed Led Zeppelin refusing simply to repeat their past.

The album spent two weeks at #1 in Britain and became the final studio record Led Zeppelin released before Bonham’s death in September 1980. What appeared to be the beginning of another musical transformation ultimately became the final studio chapter of the original band.

On This Day in 1988, “Sweet Child O’ Mine” Reached #1 in America

On September 10, 1988, Guns N’ Roses reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” the biggest American single of the band's career.

The song began when Slash came up with its unmistakable guitar figure while messing around at the house where Guns N’ Roses were living. Izzy Stradlin added the chords, and Axl Rose eventually turned lyrics inspired by his relationship with Erin Everly into the song millions would come to know.

“Sweet Child O’ Mine” remained at #1 for two weeks and became the only Guns N’ Roses song ever to top the Billboard Hot 100. Decades later, those opening guitar notes remain enough to identify it almost instantly.

September 10, 1979: Foreigner Released Head Games

On September 10, 1979, Foreigner released their third studio album, Head Games, following the huge success of Foreigner and Double Vision.

The record introduced bassist Rick Wills, formerly of Small Faces and Peter Frampton’s band, while producer Roy Thomas Baker joined Mick Jones and Ian McDonald behind the console. “Dirty White Boy,” “Head Games” and “Women” became its best-known songs.

Head Games reached #5 on the Billboard 200 and eventually went five-times Platinum in the United States. It also marked the end of Foreigner’s original six-man period, becoming the final album featuring founding members Ian McDonald and Al Greenwood.
