Known as hedgelaying, this method ensures hedgerows remain not just fit for purpose as a living fence, but also as a premier habitat for farmland wildlife. This week, 5-11 May is National Hedgerow Week, a time to consider these boundaries and their importance.

The hedgerows now are thick with May blossom, the boundaries buzzing with insects and nesting birds, the hedgers work ensuring the habitat remains for future generations..

It’s about this time, I start looking forward to getting back amongst the hedgerows. I’m certainly not wishing the summer away, and the forecast is predicting a hot spell arriving in the coming days, but the fruit is already heavy in the hedgerows, and the wind of late, has a feeling of autumn about it..the wheel is beginning to turn..

A word from the hedgerow….Before the courses start in October, I’ll be tackling this unloved hedgerow just outside the wagon. Although the results won’t be immediate, by careful management the hedgerow will once again thrive in the coming years…I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.
