International women’s day!
Today is such an important day to celebrate and use as a platform to discuss issues women face. The disparities between men and women are just as stark as ever... perhaps brought to light even more so during the pandemic. It’s women shouldering the bulk of the home schooling, housework... falling in to the traditional roles of history. Sacrificing their careers, struggling to balance their work life and home life, being a mother and a professional. More women have been made redundant than men during the pandemic. Women’s jobs are 19% more at risk than men’s. The pandemic has set equality back massively, when progress was being made but things were far from equal.
For pregnant women, the pandemic has negatively impacted birth experiences and outcomes. Pregnant women have been left to labour unaided, their care pared back, and support left outside the birth room.
And yet, despite the challenges we have faced, women have shown resourcefulness, and mental reserves we never knew we even had. We have cared for our families. We have pushed through the darkness. We have balanced and juggled. We have birthed our babes and fought for our families.
So to all the women out there. Whether you feel strong or not. You are amazing. You have accomplished so much, whether you recognise it or not.
Here’s to all the strong women out there, forged in the fires of challenge. You’ve got this.
