Despite the name, the only real cause of modern wildfires isn’t really wild at all: it’s people.

Barbecues, camp fires and discarded ci******es are overwhelmingly the causes of moorland fires in places like the Peak District.

A significant number are caused deliberately, by people who, for whatever reason, like the idea of setting the countryside on fire.

“It’s dry,” he says. “There is no Ringinglow Bog.”

A research centre at the University of Sheffield is playing a major role in the Ministry of Defence programme to develop a new nuclear warhead, The Tribune can reveal.

We have found evidence of a ‘secure cell’ established at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) since at least 2022. This unit was set up by the secretive MoD body responsible for developing nuclear weapons — the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE). The purpose of this ‘cell’ is to assist the development of a new warhead for the UK’s nuclear arsenal, known as Astraea.

We gave both the Ministry of Defence and the university the opportunity to dispute our reporting. They did not. The combined authority has confirmed they are aware of the relationship between AWE and AMRC.

Read our initial report via link in bio, with a full investigation dropping later today 🔗

Quantum computing is currently the Holy Grail of computer science — a technology that could put vastly increased computing power at humanity’s fingertips, but which is proving devilishly difficult to harness.

However, pioneering Sheffield tech firm Aegiq thinks it may have cracked the quantum code.

Released in 1998, Among Giants was screenwriter Simon Beaufoy’s follow up to the smash hit The Full Monty.

However, the film was a huge flop, grossing less than half a million worldwide, and in the decades since has all but vanished.

Is it time for a reappraisal of Sheffield’s lost summer of love?

Among Giants was supposed to be another Full Monty. Though it flopped, it should not be forgotten

Tucked away in Hackenthorpe is one of the city’s strangest heritage buildings.

One of the only spring-fed plunge pools left in the country, when it opened Birley Spa bath house was named “nature’s masterpiece”.

No one is taking to the waters these days, but the spa is still there, just about.

Hope springs eternal in Hackenthorpe

"This is an iconic building, we tried really hard to ensure it thrived and, unfortunately, we failed."

Department, the foodhall that replaced Kommune in Castle House, has closed less than two months after it opened.

So what went so wrong? And how did it all fall apart so quickly? Find out here 👇

Sheffield's preferred method of inebriation has long been the humble beer, but a determined crew of vino aficionados have been trying to change that.

Last week, the city held its first Californian-style outdoor wine fair at Bole Hills in Crookes. Can Sheffield really become a wine city?

“It’s more important than ever to do this. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, so this is not new to me, but it feels like we are going backwards.”

As the 10th annual Migration Matters festival comes to a close, we speak to three migrants about whether Sheffield is still a city of sanctuary.

Can Sheffield still claim to be a city of sanctuary?

Evidence from Park Academy suggests fixed-term exclusions are becoming commonplace.

The school has less than 1,200 students, but issued 1,164 fixed-term exclusions in 23/24.

In the previous year, there were just 677 fixed-term exclusions.

Why are children in Sheffield being excluded so regularly?

‘What you are seeing is not the bulk of the exclusions. The number of hidden exclusions is absolutely outrageous'

"I love the people, I love the pace, I love the independent spirit…”

Ahead of this year's Crossed Wires festival, Holly Williams speaks to Dino Sofos, founder and CEO of Persephonica, about his love for radio, the secret of a good podcast, and why he returned to Sheffield.

‘Having been a radio nerd as a kid and just an audio obsessive, I never lost that bug’

“A lot of people round here have already given up.”

The estates of Batemoor and Jordanthorpe are to be given £20 million over the next decade to create “change that people can see on their doorstep”.

But is it enough to address the deep-seated problems of one of Sheffield’s most deprived areas?

‘This estate needs a lot of things, more flowers is not one of them’
