Armley Mills Ghost Hunt – Friday 5th September 2025 👻
It had been around three years since I last set foot inside Armley Mills, so before the guests arrived, we took a quiet walk around the building to re-familiarise ourselves with the layout. The mill was virtually empty, the atmosphere heavy and silent- and yet, there were sounds. Faint, distant, but definitely from within the building. It felt as though someone was already aware of our presence. Taking a moment to introduce myself to the spirits, I couldn’t shake the sense that we were being listened to 👀🫣
🕯️ Group Vigil 🕯️
Once our guests had arrived, we began with a short history tour, finishing in the oldest part of the site- the Corn Mill. This is the only surviving section of the original building, after a devastating fire in the 1800s destroyed much of the rest 🔥 With centuries of history embedded in its walls, it felt like the perfect place to begin our investigation.
We set the scene by laying out our equipment across the floor: EMF meters, REM pods, motion sensor balls, dolls, and even a trip wire made from bells. Guests circled the edge of the room, the lights went out… and almost immediately, two of the motion sensor balls lit up in the centre of the floor 👻 These flashes seemed to respond directly to guests introducing themselves, sparking excitement as the activity continued throughout the vigil.
On the Alice box, the name Kate came through, and when asked, she suggested she was a child. This would align chillingly well with the building’s past, as many children once worked in the mill, with tragic accidents often cutting their lives short 🪦
Just as the group began to settle into this thought, a strange noise echoed from one corner of the room- as though something had been thrown. Though nothing appeared out of place, we all heard it. Soon after, one guest reported actually seeing a motion sensor ball move across the floor, while others experienced hot and cold spots, vibrations picked up on the EDI meter, and even sensations of being touched. It was an incredible start to the evening 👀
🕯️ Smaller vigils 🕯️
Splitting into groups, I took half into the sewing machine room to try some table tipping. Activity was subtle at first, the table gently tugging or nudging in one direction, but enough for guests to start asking questions. Through this, a spirit named Jack or Jackie seemed to come through, with possible medical connections. When the group moved nearer to a display of medical equipment, the table responded again- all while faint tapping and footsteps echoed from the darkened room.
In another room, filled with textile exhibits, guests worked with my haunted doll, Jeff the clown. Their table soon began to shake- at first faintly, but growing stronger with each question asked. Could this have been the spirit attached to Jeff making himself known once again? 🤡
🕯️ The Master’s Cottage 🕯️
For the second half of the night, I led groups into the Master’s Cottage. Dark, cobwebbed, and furnished with heavy mahogany, this area always feels like a time capsule and a ghost hunter’s dream! Here, we tried glass divination, and guests made contact with Benjamin Gott, one of the mill’s most important former owners 💼
Using the glass, Benjamin answered questions about his family and work, and when asked, even attempted to spell out his surname by tracing his initials across the table. It was difficult to interpret at times, but the effort was clear.
For another group, activity was slower to start, until once again the name of Jeff was brought up- and the glass began to move. Motion sensor balls triggered, and in a surprising twist, the upstairs light flicked on. We had no access to that part of the building, but Benjamin himself seemed to claim responsibility, telling us through the glass that he had turned it on to join us. Was this coincidence, or had the former mill owner risen from his rest to welcome us into his home? 🛏️ 👻
🕯️ Final thoughts 🕯️
All in all, Armley Mills gave us a night full of activity- from child spirits in the Corn Mill, to the presence of Jeff the clown, and even an encounter with one of Leeds’ most famous industrialists. After three years away, it was a joy to return to this fascinating and atmospheric location.
I can’t wait to be back again soon. 👻
