Welcome to Popgaze 👁

It’s been a little quiet on our socials lately…

The last eight weeks have been our busiest yet. Between family life, school holidays, and being fully immersed in client work, our own feed took a bit of a back seat.

But we’re back, and there’s plenty to share.

If you’re new here, hi. If you’ve been around for a while, thanks for sticking with us.

Swipe through for a quick reset on what we do…

Last week we had the pleasure of spending the afternoon creating content with Joanne Roughton-Arnold, CEO & Creative Director of formidability, an accomplished opera singer and passionate advocate for making opera and classical music more inclusive.

Earlier this year, we created formidability's new brand identity, and we're delighted to now continue that journey as their digital marketing partner, working across both the charity's and Joanne's own channels.

It's already becoming one of the most rewarding and inspiring projects we've had the opportunity to work on.

You can follow the journey over at FormidAbility and Joanne Roughton-Arnold: Soprano / CEO / Disability Advocate.

A fun filled identity to help tell the adventurous tale of lighthouse lens fitter Orlando Stokes 💦

We've been working with Black Country Touring this summer to design an identity for their new show Cape Custard, a thrilling tale inspired by the production of lighthouses at Chance Brothers Glassworks in the heart of Smethwick. The factory pioneered the development of lenses that continue to save lives on treacherous seas the world over.

BCT were looking for a fun and quirky identity appealing to families with young children, and that drew on a playful comic aesthetic. Taking inspiration from the high energy and chaotic illustration style of graphic comics, the identity features a title device which marries a classic cartoon font with oozing and dripping liquid custard letters. Globular, fluid shapes float around in the background and set the scene for a lighthouse marooned on jagged rocks in the middle of a swirling sea.

This route features a vibrant, fun colour palette and a bold, handdrawn font for headings which has a charming, imperfect aesthetic. Custard splat shapes can hold text and a set of handrawn stars, swirls, squiggles and lightning bolts nod to a classic comic adventure.

The identity extended across print, social media assets, interpretive boards and playful activity sheets.

Catch the immersive show inspired by our local history at venues across the Black Country this summer!

Head protection must be worn 🏛️

A massive thank you to the Urban Hax team for giving me a tour of The Guildhall in Walsall today as it gets nearer to completion ready for a grand opening later this year. We will be developing the brand identity for the new creative hub so it was amazing to get a glimpse of some of the beautiful architectural features of the Grade II* listed 19th-century landmark, including lots of sweeping arches, original flagstone and intricate ironwork.

Part of the building also housed the Walsall Borough Police headquarters and the town’s magistrates' court from 1867 right through to the 1970s so it was great to get a glimpse of the original basement holding cells and hear from the team how they are retaining and protecting the original features of the building.

The Guildhall will open later this year offering a unique combination of creative incubator and community makerspace all masterminded by the super talented team at Urban Hax. Go check it out if you're a West Midlands creative looking to join a vibrant community of creators, innovators and entrereneurs.

We just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone who’s supported Popgaze since we launched in April 👁️

It’s mad to think we’re only a few months old!

We haven’t really pushed the 'work with us' messaging yet because, honestly, we’ve been incredibly busy. We're currently collaborating on some amazing projects ranging from independent retail and hospitality to community interest companies, theatre productions and opera.

Although our diaries are full for the next few months, we do want to let you know that we’ll soon be opening up our working diary for the Autumn…

So, if you’ve got a design, marketing or social media-based project you need support with later in the year, drop us a line today to get ahead of the curve 🤙

A new chapter for Urban Hax 🌱

We've been working with the brilliant team over at Urban Hax since Spring 2025 - a community makerspace, creative incubator and coworking space based in Walsall and servicing the Black Country. Earlier this year we completed a project where we developed a new brand strategy for the organisation and a refreshed visual identity to help raise their profile and communicate the breadth of work they do.

Lindsay led a co-design workshop with the team which formed the basis for their new brand blueprint, giving the team a clear brand architecture including vision, mission and brand promises aswell as looking at straplines for external comms.

The brand identity was then brought up to date to reflect their vision of enabling everyone to find a space for experimentation, innovation and imaginative making. Working with their existing logo we updated the typography and refined the elongated shapes of the icon. This provided inspiration for a set of flat angular polygon shapes which then create a dynamic graphic language for the brand. The shapes become expressive when used flexibly across layouts, creating unusual angles and referencing the cutting edge way Urban Hax work, always pushing boundaries.

Geometric, bold sans serif fonts lend impact to the new copy, and a broad spectrum of colour feels welcoming, with earthy tones inspired by the local leather industry and green spaces, referencing Urban Hax's commitment to building a stronger, greener Walsall by sharing resources, reducing waste and supporting community projects.

We feel very grateful working with clients who are doing amazing stuff like this! Go check them out if you're a creative living in the Black Country 💚 https://urbanhax.com/
