Been meaning to visit the for far too long, and a birthday supper finally made it happen, rain and all.

We shared the Queen of Cups feast for 2 and barely came up for air for an hour. Beautiful small plates packed full of Middle Eastern flavours. With warm surroundings, the best staff and an excellent apple brandy cocktail made with local apple brandy, I honestly 100% Highly recommend.

Mulled cider, brass band, muddy boots; perfection.

A properly wonderful Christmas gathering at The Prince of Wales on Ham Hill .

Brass band music drifting across the hill, mulled cider and local ales flowing, and a pub that made everyone feel welcome, dogs, children, muddy boots and all. Even a hidden snow machine appeared for Let It Snow… pure joy.

And let’s just say the bacon bap and chips were exceptional.

Some places don’t rush you.

Ham Hill on Stoke sub Hamdon, south Somerset, has a way of reminding you what space feels like. Children exploring, dogs racing ahead, conversations slowing as the countryside stretches out before you.

A very special space for all

When the orchard can’t quite decide on the season…

An apple tree outside is it baubles ready for Christmas, or apples still hanging on from harvest? Maybe a little bit of both.

For the person who’s impossible to buy for…

Antique glass makes the perfect gift for the person who’s impossible to buy for. I’m planning to pair this beautiful new find with a bottle of quince liqueur from Somerset cider brandy, the dream combination. Thank you, Dennis Chinaworks.

Some bakes are worth changing your plans for.

And the award for the best sausage rolls and mince pies of 2025 goes to the wonderful Jess, and the fact I managed to get one (or two) before they disappeared feels like a small festive miracle.

I just love every stone of this place. It genuinely feels like a children’s storybook building come to life.

Studio visits are fast becoming my favourite way to spend a weekend…

This weekend trip took me to Dennis Chinaworks near Ilminster and Barrington, in south Somerset. Exceptional craft, beautiful surroundings, and owners who make you feel instantly at home with their knowledge and welcome.

If steps could talk, I reckon these would offer a chapter or two of village life.

A small detail from the small but perfect East Lambrook’s village church, in the pouring rain this morning in South Somerset.

A lovely way to ease into the season…

Kristy at in Huish, just outside Langport, has created a really beautiful space for workshops, simple, warm, and designed for people to gather. This time of year, it’s all about wreath making.

Her flowers and gifts are always a treat, but there’s something especially nice about settling in with friends or family, a bit of fizz, a few M&S nibbles, and a table full of winter foliage. It’s relaxed, creative, and a gentle way to start feeling festive.

If you’re after a calm, seasonal get-together, this is a lovely one, highly recommend!
