Unity Through Ceremony That way, when a person dies, loved ones know exactly what to do.

Celebrant helping you have a personalised, inclusive ceremony full of togetherness-funerals and memorials, weddings and vow renewals, naming ceremonies and more. Ceremonies are important to humans at key life and end of life events. As a celebrant, I commit to creating beautiful, inclusive and meaningful ceremonies that leave nobody behind. As a wedding celebrant, I give couples all my support and

encouragement to turn up as they truly are. Whether you think of yourselves as weird, quirky or ordinary, I want you to be your wonderful selves. You expressing your love meaningfully matters way more than following rules and convention. As a funeral and memorial celebrant, I care deeply about making sure people get the time and space they need to honour their loved one with all the tears and laughter they need. I am open to unusual approaches if they work for people, such as finding alternative venues that are comforting and familiar. I specialise in working with folk to plan their own funeral, encouraging them to consider all options while alive, including natural burial. As a naming ceremony celebrant, I take time to listen and understand the situation in which a new name is being celebrated. Whether this is for a baby, child or adult, I am sensitive to the personal and cultural significance of the naming ceremony for the individuals and families involved. As part of my celebrant practice, I run a community initiative called Solidarity Ceremonies to help tackle funeral poverty. I take every opportunity to highlight this concerning issue and push for change. I am hard-wired to do so as, before becoming a celebrant, I worked for many years running community, organisations. Folk in communities have been holding ceremonies since before church and state even existed. I believe the purpose of coming together is to honestly reflect the identities and beliefs of people at the heart of the ceremony. That is exactly what I do. I am trained, qualified and insured to hold weddings and vow renewals, funerals and memorials and (re)naming ceremonies and so much more. If you consider me for your special gathering, I will do all I can to give you the best of what I have to offer. Based in South Shields I cover North East England. I am happy to travel further afield if you feel I am the celebrant for you. You can DM, message through my website www.katemukungucelebrant.com or email [email protected] .

Six years ago marriage equality for same s*x couples became law in Northern Ireland. It feels like yesterday and another lifetime, all at once!

Campaigns for marriage equality on both sides of the Irish Sea were a big part of what inspired me to become a celebrant. When it comes to equality, we should all just say yes.

I know I am a week early, but I wanted to get ahead of the peak Blue Monday nonsense we will be subjected to from different quarters. It really isn't a thing and has been invented to sell you stuff to "give you a lift".

I can't knock folk for selling online as I use this space to sell my celebrancy services. However, I can say that keeping the Blue Monday myth alive is unhelpful. It sets the tone for feeling unhappy. January can be tough already without placing extra expectations on folk to be sad.

Whatever gives you a lift - chatting with friends, hibernating with a hot drink, lo******ng with your significant other - just do lots of that this month. Put Blue Monday in the bin where it belongs, apart from New Order's Blue Monday (definitely don't put that in the bin). 🎶

I've seen folk I know post their word for the year. As examples, Emma Satchell chose anchor and Sarah Jane Phelps chose shine. I love the idea of this, reflecting on the past present and future with intention. It has really made me think.

Do you have a 2026 word that fits what matters to you? If so, is it something you would state or keep quietly to yourself?

My first thought was unify as it speaks to my purpose as a celebrant (unity through ceremony). However, that word applies every year and is not 2026 specific.

I'm not sure I can commit to a word for the whole year yet. I say that because I know it will be a year of immense change. However, the word that sits with me right now is prioritise. I guess keeping priorities at the forefront of my mind will help navigate change.

Image Description: in front of a photo of Kate is the question "what would your 2026 word be?"

The first time I saw snow on South Shields beach it was a "pinch me" moment, which I captured in this pic. I've had lots of those moments since I moved to the coast.

Imagine getting married on a snowy beach - beautiful and brrrr all at once!

I can heartily recommend this training course. Edit to say, whilst it technically doesn't cover South Tyneside, the organisers have come up with a workaround. If you want to set up a business with a social purpose, this is a perfect programme for you.

Get ready to kickstart your business with purpose in just one day of intensive training January 27th 2026 - don't miss out!

I particularly appreciated reading "thanks for helping us make it what we wanted it to be". When I started practicing as a celebrant, I realised I was dissatisfied about families being given limited funeral choices. It felt to me that the process was leading rather than responding to people.

At first I wondered if it was just me. Then I found my people (though they are all women so far) and now I am part of a growing squad of practitioners intent on making funerals more personalised.

Just before the year ended I signed up to a programme by Match and Dispatch called Celebrant Plus. I did so to learn more ways to improve funeral choices for people. I look forward to getting started in the next few weeks. Between this training and being part of the Canny Death Collective with likeminded practitioners in the North East, I hope to do my bit to challenge the assumption that one or two approaches to funerals fit all - they don't.

Rosa Luxemburg, Marie Curie and Albert Einstein are just some introverted folk whose deep thinking, creativity and innovation shaped our world. Let's celebrate these qualities.

If you are an introvert planning a ceremony, there are lots of ways we can align your ceremony to what works best for you. Let's do it your way.

Image description: the image of a woman sitting alone on grass, drinking from a cup has text that says "happy world introvert day. let's celebrate people who embrace solitude".
