Another teaser for SSI International ticked off!

One of the biggest challenges in underwater cinematography is the almost constant changing of shooting conditions. Very few locations have consistent visibility, light, water colour and clarity, even the Red Sea.

Over 22 consecutive days of filming with two different cameras (my RED Digital Cinema Komodo X and Dan Abbott Z-Cam) no two dives looked the same. Sometimes, the conditions would vary dramatically on each dive so matching cameras which read colour differently and maintaining consistency can be difficult, at times impossible.

Sometimes however, those different conditions can help bring a piece to life, particularly in these lifestyle teasers. The variability between shooting conditions allows for each shot to have its own identity and avoids viewer fatigue that can happen when every frame looks identical.

Once again, huge thanks to the amazing models who did such a great job and to Scuba Seekers for all their support during the shoot, it was such a pleasure to work with you all!

Oceanic Blacktips are a great Shark to work with.

They’re beautiful, inquisitive and charismatic and one of, if not the most “sharky” looking shark of all.

I’d not had too much experience with them up until May 2025 when in the strait of Hormuz, I encountered a particularly aggressive individual. I was on my own off the coast of Iran when a big Blacktip charged at me full speed. In 20 years diving with sharks it’s the only time I have ever had to brace for a bite. Thankfully I was able to change the sharks mind at the last second (without touching it) but since then, I’ve been in love with them, definitely one of my favourites!

Everyone wants “cinematic” footage but many don’t know what that actually means.

“Cinematic” is about so much more than colour and it starts in camera and on-location. If your lighting is flat, your highlights are clipped and your location/production design is crap, it’s unlikely you’ll get close to cinematic in post.

A big part of that movie look is deep, clean blacks with detail retained in the shadows where appropriate. Don’t be afraid of contrast, embrace it. Milky mid-tones and shadows can suggest either a lack of confidence, inaccurate monitoring or lack of experience.

If your project requires a faded, milky look, go for it but if you want your footage to punch, don’t be afraid of the dark.

Another late finish, another teaser done for SSI International

This was a fun edit to colour. It can be tempting to think colour grading is as easy as just applying a filter on your phone as we’ve become accustomed to these days but when it comes to real correction and look building, filters and LUTs just can’t do it like a colourist can.

This edit has a lot going on under the hood, split-toning, shadow and highlight control, variety between light and dark, film emulation and all focussed on what colour grading is about, the augmentation of the story/message. It takes hours sometimes but the time is always worth it.

Since May I’ve been hard at it doing all the post-production on 208 training videos for the new SSI International XR training manual, working long nights and weekends to make them the best they can be.

I’m now finally on to the really fun bit, the lifestyle teasers. I’ve always found dive lifestyle and training videos to be a bit, well, cheesy so I’ve gone all out to make this teaser for the CCR programmes as cool and cinematic as possible and to capture the essence of technical diving.

Great visuals, a music track you’d listen to on its own merit and a good high tempo feel.
