Arrest after suspect arson attack at supermarket

Two neighbouring buildings had to be evacuated and people in the area in Stoke-on-Trent were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.

Fire crews were called after smoke and flames were seen coming from the Farmfoods shop on Moorland Road in Burslem, shortly after 13:45 BST on Thursday.

Asking its staff to consider taking voluntary redundancy shows a university "cares little for morale" and the plan will mean students will suffer, says a union.

Man killed his mother while high on ketamine

A man who killed his mother at their home while in a drug-induced psychosis has been jailed for more than seven years for manslaughter.

Experienced boxer Finn Henry attacked Suzanne Henry, 54, at their house in Madeley, Staffordshire, on 1 May 2023, and she died in hospital two days later.

Sanctions for councillor who harassed clerk

Angela Drakakis-Smith, parish councillor for Betley, Balterley and Wrinehill in Staffordshire, was found to have harassed Gywn Griffiths, continually questioning the accuracy of his meeting reports.

The investigation into her behaviour that saw Ms Drakakis-Smith removed from positions of responsibility could cost the authority more than £23,000.

Plans to ban racing meets and car cruising along a Staffordshire main road are being considered by local councillors.

Large parcel centre fire causes huge smoke plume

Businesses near a large fire at a parcel centre in Staffordshire have been urged to evacuate as dozens of firefighters tackled the blaze.

Ten fire engines were sent to the blaze at Super Smart Service on Cley Road, near the A460 Orbital Island in Cannock, at 06:15 GMT, the fire service said.

Construction giant JCB plans warehouse move

JCB is set to leave its main logistics base in Stoke-on-Trent, for a larger site near East Midlands Airport.

More than 200 people work at the Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, and all those affected by the plan will be offered the chance to move, the construction equipment firm said.
