“The only thing stopping me is me.”

What struck me when speaking to Paralympian Bruce Dee was that belief wasn’t the starting point of his journey - it was the unlock.

Getting to Paris helped him realise something critical: That he has the potential to be one of the best in the world.

Not because somebody told him.
Not because success was guaranteed.

But because his preparation, progress and experiences give him the evidence to believe.

Confidence isn’t built through positive thinking alone.

It grows when belief catches up with capability.

A powerful conversation on self-belief, performance and realising what’s possible.

“I’ve turned a corner this week… I’ve been approaching things in a calm way.”

What stood out speaking to Paralympian Bruce Dee at the recent GB Aquatics Championships wasn’t just the results, it was his composure behind it.

At elite level, progress often comes when athletes or individuals stop chasing outcomes and put their energy and focus into the process itself.

That week in London, Bruce achieved 6 British records!

“To get the English record I’ve been chasing for a while was brilliant.”

A really interesting conversation on self-belief, resilience, and learning to trust the process under pressure.

Fresh from having achieved multiple British records at the GB Aquatics Championships and a breakthrough week in the pool at AP Race International (), I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Paralympian Bruce Dee () to explore the mindset behind his elite performance.

Belief. Resilience. Trusting the process.

And why the only person truly standing in your way might be yourself.

Coming Soon on Exceed High Performance Podcast.

“I eventually want to be one of the best in the world. And that starts here.”

What stood out speaking to British Champion Lauren Cox ( ) wasn’t just ambition - it was the mindset behind it.

The willingness to reframe pressure as ‘performance’.
To enjoy the race within the race.
To stay focused on ex*****on rather than the noise around her.

“I love racing… the closer it is, the better.”

A really interesting conversation on mindset, discipline and what sits behind elite performance.

Catch Lauren racing this weekend at AP Race International ()

One thing became very clear speaking with Lauren Cox at the recent GB Aquatics Championships:

Elite performance begins long before the moment itself.

In the visualisation beforehand.
The inner dialogue under pressure.
The discipline to keep showing up.
And the ability to turn setbacks into motivation.

In this episode of the Exceed High Performance podcast, Lauren reflected openly on missing out on the Olympics, and how that experience ultimately became part of what shaped her. Lauren also spoke about the importance of rehearsing performance mentally, to the point where, by the time she races, it feels like she’s already been there before.

Not because confidence simply appears.
But because belief is built through preparation.

And while this conversation happened in the context of elite sport, the principles underneath it feel far more universal.

How we prepare.
The stories we tell ourselves.
How we respond when things don’t go to plan.

That’s what fascinates me most about these environments.

A conversation I’ve been reflecting on since GB Championships.

Not just about performance itself,
but the internal process behind it.

The preparation before the moment.
The thoughts that shape performance under pressure.
And the way setbacks can become part of what moves us forward.

Lessons that extend far beyond sport.

Full episode with Lauren Cox, two-time British Champion coming soon on Exceed High Performance.

Don’t normally post about family here, but proud of my young athlete this weekend - 4-time East Region Champion 2026.

A lot of people talk about high performance. Far fewer live it consistently… through the work, the standards they keep, and how they treat others when nobody is watching.

Words inspire, but actions reveal character.

Performance is decided long before it’s ever seen.

At GB Championships this weekend, I wasn’t focused on the races themselves, but on everything that makes them possible.

The internal work.
The unseen preparation.
The moments that don’t get measured.

Because at the highest level, performance is rarely separated by physical ability alone.

It’s shaped by how people think.
How they feel.
How they respond when it matters.

And that doesn’t just apply in sport.

It shows up in leadership.
In decision-making.
In how we handle pressure, setbacks, and expectation.

This is the space I’m stepping further into, bringing a perspective shaped in elite sport, but relevant far beyond it.

Thank you to for the access and trust and to the incredible champions who shared their journeys with me - Lauren Cox () and Bruce Dee (). Thanks also for the encouragement… first time in the media zone 🎥!!

“Under pressure, you don’t suddenly become better- you default to your habits.” Clive Woodward

A behind the scenes look at what drives high-performance teams.

With Olympic medalists and World Champions Matt Richards and James Guy, it’s easy to focus on results.

But what stood out in the podcast episode Tom (Dr Tom Bates) and I filmed with them, was what sits underneath.

Trust. Honesty. Standards.
And a bond that holds… even when they’re competing against each other.

Especially relevant this week at the GB Aquatics Championships in London, when team mates go head to head. Watch Matt and James live on BBC iPlayer’s coverage of the finals tonight, Saturday and Sunday!
