⚠️ Person rushed to hospital after COLLISION causes major disruption on Houghton road

One person has been taken to hospital after a collision in Houghton-le-Spring this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a road traffic incident near Houghton Road, in the Grasswell area, at around 12.17pm on Sunday, October 4.

The incident caused disruption for drivers, with traffic affected while emergency services dealt with the scene and diversions put in place.

North East Ambulance Service confirmed one ambulance crew was dispatched to the collision.

A spokesperson said one patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for further treatment.

The road was affected for around two hours, with traffic reported to have returned to normal shortly after 2pm.

It is not currently clear what caused the collision or whether anyone else was injured.

Police have also been contacted for further information about the incident.

Drivers travelling through the area were advised to expect delays while the emergency response was underway.
