Everywhere I look right now, I see people talking about “building systems”
Is this just the latest business buzzword? Correct me if I'm wrong here...
Are we all actually talking about systems or are we just talking about processes that make things more efficient?
Here’s how I’ve started to separate the two in my own head ~
A process cuts out time. It makes things smoother, simpler and more efficient.
Examples?
– Canva templates = process.
– Using AI = process.
– Sending automated emails = process (until the automatic sales start, then it's a system)
– Even my 1:1 strategy work = process (because it ends - I have to fill that gap again).
– Digital products = process (we're made to think they fly off the sell immediately, but until they do, they're a process of promotion).
A system is something that runs without you.
It’s repeatable, scalable, give you time freedom and can make money (potentially) while you sleep, or very easily in the day which results in financial freedom.
YouTube is a system (eventually).
A membership becomes a system once the structure is in place.
The same goes for affiliate or community-based businesses - it starts as a process, but evolves into a system.
Investments - a system - when they're going the right way 😅
What really got me thinking about this was working with a brand as from last year that had an actual repeatable and scalable system - which generates passive income.
Yes, there were processes to set it up (nothing worthwhile comes without effort),
but once running, it became an income-generating and community-building machine - fast!
And that made me pause.
It’s made me think differently about:
– How I’m building my own business as a solo entrepreneur
– How I use my skills and time to help others
– What I now say yes to
Because awareness comes before action - and that awareness has completely reshaped how I see my future.
If this topic interests you, I’m actually breaking it down in real life, for free, this Sunday at 1pm-3pm at The Pepper Pot in Derby, with my partner, Ashley.
We’re opening up the conversation about systems, sustainability and smart business models - and you’re very welcome to join us.
Come for the new knowledge, stay for a coffee ☕
