There’s a cultural difference in how people react to cheating by men versus women, but morally and emotionally, betrayal hurts regardless of gender.

In many societies, especially in traditional communities, a man’s cheating is often excused with phrases like “men are naturally polygamous” or “it’s just physical.” Meanwhile, when a woman cheats, she is judged far more harshly, insulted, or treated as if she destroyed the entire family alone. That double standard is what many people criticize.

But in reality, the pain caused by infidelity is not measured by gender. Both can break trust, damage emotional security, affect children, and destroy the foundation of a marriage. The real difference is often in:

* Society’s reaction
* The reasons behind the cheating
* How men and women are socialized emotionally

Some people argue that men are more likely to separate emotion from s*x, while women may cheat due to emotional neglect, loneliness, revenge, or lack of affection. But those are patterns, not universal truths. Men also cheat emotionally, and women can cheat casually too.

What matters most is this:

* Cheating is still cheating.
* Betrayal does not become less painful because of gender.
* A marriage cannot survive double standards for long.

A healthy relationship requires the same rules for both partners: honesty, loyalty, accountability, and respect.

The boo to the booless

In many Nigerian homes, society has normalized the cheating habits of men. A married man can openly disrespect his vows, keep side chicks, and still expect to be called “the head of the family.” Friends laugh about it, elders excuse it, and people tell the wife to endure because “all men cheat.” But the moment a woman does the same thing, the world suddenly catches fire. She becomes a disgrace, an abomination, and everyone wants to stone her like she committed the greatest sin on earth.

That double standard is the problem.

People were quick to attack the “boo of the booless,” dragging his name across social media because he was involved with someone’s wife. Yet many of the same people defended Judy, who not only had an affair with a married man but eventually married him. So what exactly is the standard here? Is cheating only evil when a woman benefits from it?

A relationship cannot survive on hypocrisy. If faithfulness is expected from women, then it should also be demanded from men. Marriage should not be a prison of endurance for women and a playground of excuses for men.

Freedom at last

When Amara’s husband moved to Canada, he promised he was only leaving temporarily to “settle down first” before bringing her over. For three years, she defended him against whispers from neighbors and pressure from relatives. She stayed loyal, cared for his aging mother, and waited for the life they planned together.

Then one night, her cousin sent her photos from Facebook.

There he was, smiling beside another woman in a white wedding suit, holding hands beneath a banner that read: “Congratulations to the Newlyweds.”

Amara felt her chest tighten. Her husband had secretly remarried abroad while still calling her every Sunday like nothing had changed.

The next morning, she packed everything his family had ever given her. The television. The freezer. The jewelry from their introduction ceremony. Even the cooking pots his mother proudly bought after their wedding.

She hired a small truck and drove straight to his family compound.

His relatives rushed outside in confusion as she carefully unloaded every item into the courtyard.

“I refuse to keep gifts from people who helped their son deceive me,” she said calmly.

His mother burst into tears.

But Amara didn’t cry.

For the first time in years, she walked away feeling free instead of abandoned.

Ada never imagined her family would fall apart because of a phone notification. While helping her father reset his phone , a WhatsApp message popped up on the screen:

“Goodnight, my king. I miss you already ❤️”

Confused, Ada opened the chat and froze. Her father had been pretending to be a wealthy single businessman online, flirting with young women barely older than her. Different profile pictures. Fake promises. Romantic voice notes. Some women even called him “future husband.”

At first, she hoped it was a joke. But the deeper she looked, the worse it became. He sent money, planned secret trips, and lied about being divorced. Meanwhile, her mother worked extra shifts believing her husband was loyal.

One evening, Ada confronted him quietly.

“Why are you doing this to Mum?”

Her father stared at the floor, unable to answer.

But the real shock came days later when one of the women arrived at their house unannounced, holding gifts and calling his name lovingly in front of the entire family.

Her mother’s face shattered with heartbreak.

And in that moment, Ada realized her father hadn’t just been cheating online.

He had been living an entirely different life.
