By 1890, patients at Glamorgan County Lunatic Asylum were typically photographed within a week of admission to be added to their case files. Patients who stayed longer or were re-admitted often had multiple photographs, documenting their physical changes over time.

Dr David Finlay used photography to record patients in what he described as "their natural habitat." Similar to many doctors, he photographed patients with diseases, physical deformities, and signs of violence.

'Hope is the anchor of the soul' โš“๏ธ

This beautiful little cross-stitch book was made by Theresa Verity when she was abt six years old. Theresa died of meningitis at age 10 in 1861.

I came across this in the personal archive of Theresa's sister, Jessie. Jessie was 4 years old when her sister died, and she kept this little book with her for the rest of her life.

From about 1853, Dinah Leach and her daughters ran a Young Ladies School in this house on Newcastle Hill. The house was left to Catherine Leach (Dinah's daughter) on the promise it would continue to be used as school rooms.

Catherine and her sister, Jennie, ran the school rooms until at least 1926. On her death, she left the school rooms to her niece.

Her niece sold the school rooms to the Nazareth Apostolic Church which later became a private residence.

Hereford Cathedral Chained Library โ›“๏ธ

Hereford Cathedralโ€™s 17th-century Chained Library is the largest to survive with all its chains, rods, and locks intact.

The chaining of books was a widespread and effective security system. A chain is attached at one end to the front cover of each book; the other end is slotted onto a rod running along the bottom of each shelf.

The system allows a book to be taken from the shelf and read at the desk, but not to be removed from the bookcase.
