On first reading Taylor’s case notes, one wonders why he was admitted to Powick Lunatic Asylum. Aged only 18 on admission on 3 January 1893, his admission notes read ‘This is his first attack of four weeks duration the supposed cause being unknown. He has been idiotic in his conduct for four yea...

Can you help George Marshall Medical Museum with a spot of family history research to find out about some people who were admitted to the Worcester City and County Lunatic Asylum in the 19th century?

Bilingual post - English below;

Mae’n heddiw felly beth am ddathlu’r achlysur trwy wneud bisgedi bara sinsir? Cofnodwyd y rysáit yma yn llyfr Caroline Pierce ac mae’n gofyn am;

Un pwys o flawd
½ pwys o Driog
½ owns o Sinsir
6 owns o Fenyn
½ pwys o Siwgr
A pheth croen lemon “os oes chwant”

Yn anffodus, does dim cyfarwyddyd ar sut i roi’r cynhwysion at ei gilydd nac am ba mor hir i’w pobi. Ond os benderfynwch chi roi tro ar ail-greu’r rysáit, byddem wrth ein bodd yn clywed sut weithiodd pethau!

~~~
Today is so why not mark the occasion by making some gingerbread biscuits? This recipe was recorded in Caroline Pierce’s book and calls for;
One lb of flour
½ lb of Treacle
½ oz of Ginger
6 oz of Butter
½ lb of Sugar
And some lemon peel “if you like it”
Unfortunately, there’s no guidance on how to put the ingredients together nor how long to bake them for. But if you decide to recreate the recipe, we would love to hear how it turns out!
It’s Volunteers Week!
Eve is listing court depositions for Glamorgan.
This deposition relates to the prosecution at Merthyr Tydfil of Ann Long on 28 Dec 1872, accused of the theft of one woollen scarf and one knitted vest, property of Luke Owens. She was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months hard labour at the Swansea House of Correction.
The descriptions produced by our volunteers can be found on our catalogue. The Petty Sessions depositions, 1855-1880, can be searched here https://canfod.glamarchives.gov.uk/en/records/Q/S/D/2 and the Quarter Sessions depositions here https://canfod.glamarchives.gov.uk/en/records/Q/S/D/1
A productive day at Glamorgan Archives looking at Medical Reports and minutes of the Committee of visitors to Glamorgan County Lunatic Asylum 📚✍️🏻🔍
The Committee of Visitors was a group of local gentry tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of the Glamorgan County Lunatic Asylum.
I was looking at the minutes to find references to staff deaths, accidents, and burials. I came across a head attendant who had his fingers amputated after getting them caught in the cogs of a machine 😳
Here are a few snippets from the minutes ✍️🏻
Rituals for saying goodbye to the dead have existed for thousands of years and reflect social, cultural and religious beliefs. We can learn so much about a society by studying their attitudes towards death, dying and the dead.
