What's 'Education through Storytelling?' What's this Storytelling Teacher approach?
Since announcing my next adventure, I've had a few people get in touch asking me what's it all about. So, I thought I'd share a bit more about it!
Bringing together my skills as a filmmaker and writer and my 20 years experience in the classroom, I've seen the incredible power stories can have to engage and transform learning. The Storytelling Teacher approach puts narrative at the heart of delivery. It embeds storytelling ideas, structures and techniques into the design, planning and, most importantly, the delivery for any subject, for any age group, and for any topic. By using the fundamental elements of a great story — characters, setting, plot, and conflict — you can make learning more engaging, memorable, and meaningful.
For learners it deepens understanding, provides context and connection, helping them to grasp complex concepts and remember information more effectively. It increases engagement, creates curiosity and emotional investment, turning passive learners into active participants. It also enhances core skills, empowering learners to think critically, be creative and solve problems.
For educators, it provides a flexible framework for designing engaging lessons that captivate and inspire. The simple key plot points can allow you to quickly plan both individual lessons or long-term schemes of work, and works across all subjects—from science to history to drama—making your teaching more cohesive and impactful. It also builds in Assessment for Learning, core skills development and the United Nations' SDG goals.
The Storytelling Teacher approach is for anyone looking to create a more engaging and effective learning environment, whether new to the profession or experienced.
