Thanks to TOADS Little Theatre - Torquay for inviting us along to the first night of 'Underdog, the Other Other Bronte' (written by Sarah Gordon, directed by Al Dunn). First time for a while we've made it to a TOADS season production, and as ever, we weren't disappointed. Having only limited knowledge of the Bronte sisters' story this was a great introduction with dialogue brought right up to date with a smattering of spicy language (nothing more offensive than Saturday night adult TV though...and certainly not gratuitous given the story). The all female cast did a smashing job. How anyone can learn so much dialogue is beyond me, not a prompt to be heard all night. The staging was stripped back but effective and the ensemble-added sound and visual effects both charming and witty.
The casting of the three sisters was perfect. Charlotte, the eldest sister's maternal instinct battling with her literary competitiveness creates the perfect anti-heroine to counter sweet Anne and no-nonsense Emily.
Both a tragedy and triumph of sisterhood!
I imagine quite a few copies of Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Agnes Grey and the The Tenant of Wildfell Hall will be getting a dusting off and revisiting this week in the Bay!
It's raining all week, what better way to spend a November evening - GET TICKETS HERE -
