🚐 Have we made life more complicated than it needs to be?

The older I get, the more I question what we’re all working so hard for.

Bigger houses, newer cars, more possessions, bigger bills… and then working longer hours just to afford it all.

One of the biggest things van life taught me wasn’t how to live in a small space.

It was how little I actually needed to be happy.

Don’t get me wrong, van life isn’t always easy. There are compromises, challenges and days when you question what you’re doing.

But there’s something incredibly freeing about realising you don’t need everything society tells you that you should have.

And you don’t even have to live in a van to appreciate that.

🚐 Could YOU survive living in a van?

When people think about van life, they often picture beautiful beaches, incredible sunsets and waking up somewhere different every morning.

And yes, those moments are amazing. But there’s another side to van life that doesn’t always make it onto social media.

The cold mornings, finding somewhere to park, keeping warm, managing your money and making everyday life work in a very small space.

A while back, I made this video about surviving van life, based on my own experiences of living in my little VW T4 while working full-time.

It became one of my popular videos on YouTube, so I thought I’d share the full video here for those of you who haven’t seen it.

Because van life isn’t always easy, but it can completely change the way you look at life, money and what really matters.

Sometimes all you need is a van, a beach and someone special to share it with. ❤️🚐🌊

It’s funny how the simplest things in life often turn out to be the best.

No expensive holidays, no fancy hotels, no big plans. Just the freedom to jump in the van, head for the coast and spend some quality time together.

One thing van life has taught me is that happiness doesn’t always come from having more. Sometimes it comes from appreciating what you’ve already got.

Good company, fresh sea air and a little bit of freedom. That’s pretty hard to beat. ❤️

Everyone thinks summer is the best time to start van life… but I’m not sure I agree. 👀🚐

Winter might actually be one of the BEST times to start.

Sounds backwards, I know.

But if you can make van life work when it’s cold, dark, wet and the glamorous Instagram version has disappeared… you’ll know whether this lifestyle is genuinely for you.

And there are actually some big advantages to starting in winter that people rarely talk about.

I made this video about exactly that — the good bits, the difficult bits and why I genuinely think winter can be the perfect time to begin your van life journey.

With winter approaching again, it seemed like the right time to share it here.

Everyone talks about the freedom of van life in summer… but I actually prefer it when the temperature drops. 🚐❄️

Quieter beaches, emptier car parks, fewer vans and some of my favourite park-ups suddenly become usable again.

Yes, winter van life has its challenges — cold mornings, dark evenings and plenty of rain — but there’s something pretty special about being tucked up in a warm van while it’s freezing outside.

For me, winter is when van life gets interesting.

Early start. Coffee in the van. And another full weekend at work.

This is probably the side of van life that doesn’t get shown quite as much.

It’s not always waking up next to a beach, travelling wherever you want and watching sunsets from the back doors.

For a lot of us, normal life still carries on. We get up early, go to work, pay the bills and try to make the most of the time we have left.

I’ve worked full-time throughout most of my van-life journey, and strangely, that’s part of what I like about it.

I’m not trying to escape work completely. I’m trying to build a life where work doesn’t have to be the whole point of living.

So this weekend might be mostly work… but there’ll be another park-up, another trip and another adventure around the corner.

I saw this shared on a local page and it really hit home.

Someone struggling to put fuel in the car, buy shoes for their kids and pay the water bill.

And I think this is part of the reason we’re seeing more and more people looking at alternative ways of living.

Van life used to be seen mainly as travelling, adventure and waking up next to a beach.

But for some people now, it’s becoming something completely different.

It’s about reducing the biggest monthly expense most of us have — housing. It’s about simplifying life, owning less, needing less and hopefully having a little more money left at the end of the month.

Of course, van life isn’t free. You still have fuel, insurance, repairs, food, parking and plenty of unexpected costs. And it definitely isn’t the answer for everyone.

But when people are working and still struggling to afford the basics, it’s not difficult to understand why more people are questioning the traditional way of living.

For me, that’s one of the biggest changes I’ve noticed with van life.

It’s not always about escaping work and travelling the world anymore.

Sometimes it’s simply about trying to make life more affordable.

Can’t fill up my car. Can’t fill my fridge.

My water bill is sitting on the coffee table, reminding me that I’m absolutely skint.

There’s a hole in my kid’s school shoes that needs another round of superglue, and at this point I can’t even afford the bloody superglue.

I work. I try. I prioritise the kids and the bills, and somehow there’s still never enough.

I can’t be the only person sitting here wondering how on earth we’re supposed to keep doing this.

There’s something about a sunrise that makes getting up early completely worth it. 🌅

One of my favourite things about van life is waking up, opening the door and seeing mornings like this.

No expensive hotel. No complicated plans. Just a van, a quiet spot and a view that makes you stop for a minute and appreciate where you are.

⛽ £2 A LITRE FOR DIESEL… we’re basically there again! 😳

I’ve just filled up at £1.99.9 a litre — and that was one of the CHEAPER garages.

For anyone living or travelling in a van, rising fuel prices could seriously change how we do van life. Fewer trips? Longer park-ups? Less exploring?

And it’s obviously not just van life — anyone who relies on their vehicle for work or everyday life is feeling it.
