I've just turned down an exciting opportunity, to speak on the global stage at AccessAbilities Expo in Dubai. Here's why
This year I was invited to speak at the Access Abilities Expo in Dubai, one of the world’s leading platforms for accessibility and inclusion. For anyone working in this space, it’s a huge honour, but after reflection, I made the difficult decision not to go.
Why? Because sometimes leadership isn’t about grabbing every opportunity, it’s about knowing when to say no.
The reality is, attending would’ve cost me £3,000 on my own, or £5,000 if I had the support I’d need to travel safely, and that’s a huge outlay for a social entrepreneur without a corporate budget!
But aside from that, I also couldn’t secure the right support in time. Travelling solo isn’t just about getting on a plane, it’s about navigating airports and transportation with luggage, whilst managing my symptoms and conditions, in a country I've not been before.
Without this support, it would’ve been an impossible struggle and alot of money spent, only for me to not fully be able to maximise the opportunity. And beyond all that? I’ve already had a massive year.
Rough sleeping in my wheelchair overnight, the growth of my accessibility videos service, first public screening of my documentary, and the imminent launch of Access Outdoors CIC, not forgetting our first inclusive festival on 20th September.
On top of all this, on 30th September, I'll be speaking at West Northamptonshire Council Disability Confident event, with the opportunity to show local businesses and employers how invaluable a person with disabilities can be!
So, you see, big things are happening, right here at home, and whilst we want Access Outdoors to have a global impact, I believe you build from the ground up and prove it in your own community first. We’re not quite set up yet to take this international, and I’d rather build strong foundations than chase shiny stages.
There were other elements which I won't bore you with, but the most important reason?
I haven’t seen my mum in months and I'm becoming more and more ill, with a desperate need for a break. Dubai will still be there next year, but my Mum and I might not!
So yes, it was incredibly hard to turn down. But believe it is the right call. Because real leadership isn’t always about saying yes, sometimes it’s about having the courage to say no, and focus on what matters most.
However, I'm hoping to be invited back next year, to take accessible adventures and powerchair off-roading to Dubai, whilst also maybe working on an accessibility project with Kat and Isaac 🤞🤞
