Congrats to former Glasgow firefighter Jim Forbes who turns 100 this month.

On Friday, he turned 100, celebrating with his sons, Kenneth, 66, and Brian, 73, daughters Moira, 77, and Susan, 62, and the grand “children”, who range in age from 40 down to three.

During his career he helped fight every major fire Glasgow suffered during its worst spell as Tinderbox City: Cheapside Street, James Watt Street, Kilbirnie Street, the STV studios. Many of his colleagues were lost in the line of duty.

“I don’t know what the secret to getting to 100 is, but I walk every day and I drink green tea,” he says, with a smile.

“Maybe that’s it. Lots of green tea … “

A Glasgow secondary where the number of pupils studying for Advanced Highers has jumped up by more than 60 percent says the city’s new model is a huge boost for school-leavers “in a competitive market.”

In 2024/2025, 55 young people studied at least one Advanced Higher at Knightswood Secondary, compared to 34 in the previous year, and 23 in 2002/2023, while the number of A passes doubled from six in 2023 to 12 last year.

The number of pupils studying two Advanced Highers rose to 22 from 13 last year, and the number doing three has increased from two to seven since 2023/2024.

Glasgow City Council faced criticism when its Advanced Higher Hub at Glasgow Caledonian University – designed to allow sixth year pupils from across the city the chance to study AH subjects not offered in their own schools – was axed due to funding cuts.

A disabled mum has claimed her Christmas was ruined after housing bosses botched vital repairs to her home.

Emma Brogan, along with her 18-year-old twin sons and pet cat, was decanted from her Knightswood flat after a burst pipe last May flooded both their bathroom and part of the hallway.

The 46-year-old told the Glasgow Times that what should have been a straightforward process turned into a 'nightmare' that affected both her mental and physical health, as well as her ability to work properly due to stress.

She added: "I have a disability in my back, I've got a Blue Badge for it, and throughout this, it went, and I had a full spasm which I haven't experienced in about four years.

"I usually love Christmas, but I didn't enjoy it this year because of the flat.

"I am normally super organised, but my mood was low due to stress."
