We get an in-depth look into evidence used as part of the landmark case, the first to see a high-profile Syrian intelligence colonel jailed for life for crimes against humanity. We also hear from a man who smuggled documents out of Syria to aid bringing Anwar Raslan to justice, and from men and woman who suffered abuse under the direction of the notorious colonel.

Tomorrow in part two of our new series, The Trial of Anwar R, on Al Jazeera English :

An exclusive insight into how evidence used in the landmark Syrian war crimes case was perilously smuggled out of the country by those willing to risk their lives to fight injustice. The trial saw the first high-profile intelligence colonel sentenced to life for crimes against humanity.

In our programme, reporter Nina Donaghy also hears from some of the victims of the notorious detention centre Anwar Raslan ran, and key figures, like Ambassador Stephen Rapp (pictured), who hope that the case will have wider significance for others who’ve suffered at the hands of the Assad regime.

For the first time, a high-profile member of the Syrian regime has been convicted of crimes against humanity at a court in Germany. Syrian colonel Anwar Raslan was sentenced to life in prison.

There are over a dozen ethnic insurgencies in Myanmar, many of which have been opposed to the coup which took place in February 2021. But their resistance has come at a cost. The Myanmar army has launched a lethal campaign of airstrikes – killing dozens and injuring thousands. Over 70, 000 have been forced out of their homes.

Yet – these ethnic insurgents continue to find new ways to stand up to the regime. Studio 9 Films reports from a military training camp where a new alliance is being forged. They are providing training to pro-democracy protestors from the mainland. Could this unlikely alliance take on one of the most brutal military regime in the world?

54 million people now face a humanitarian catastrophe as Myanmar plunges into chaos. Studio 9 Films has gained access to a military training camp on the border of China where an unlikely alliance is being forged. Pro-democracy civilians have joined ethnic nationalist insurgents for military training in order to learn how to take on Myanmar’s military – one of the most brutal armies in the world.
Known as ‘keyboard warriors’ – these ordinary civilians have given up their steady jobs to fight for their freedoms.

Now, over ten thousand civilian protestors have received military training from ethnic insurgent armies on the border regions to gain military training and take one of the most lethal armies in the world.
