✨ Spectacle of Light Welford Park and only 20 mins from Swindon

Last year we also had the excitement of visiting the Spectacle of Light and when we pulled up to the gates on Friday my 9 year old said- ‘Yes, it’s this one! I love this place!’

As we walked round he declared it ‘the best light trail ever’ and I have to agree with him that this is a pretty special event.

🌟 There have been some changes to the event this year, with a new layout, but the same vibe we loved last year - stunning light installations set to atmospheric music with light-up structures to walk through, lantern strewn lawns and beautiful projections throughout. The walk took us about an hour and a half in total.

🍰 As you make your way around the light trail there are lots of treats to enjoy along the way. We loved the marshmallow toasting pits and the food stands about half way round have a great range of options. Both me and my son remembered the amazing brownies and ice cream from last year and it was just as good this year too!

✨ Visiting the Spectacle of Light is such a treat. It’s a stroke of genius to hold this event before the Christmas busy season and it also means you can enjoy a beautiful evening amongst the lights as the darker nights draw in.

We highly recommend it!

Wasp phobia mum hack 🐝

Brilliant idea from Sarah (posted with permission)

‘If, like me, you have a child who suffers terribly in the summer because of her wasp phobia, I cannot begin to tell you what a life saver this was today at a local festival.

We could put her in it to eat (picnics have become a HUGE no-no for us) and give her somewhere to just breathe when the wasps got too much for her.

It’s actually a mosquito net for a bed but worked brilliantly. Easy up, easy down, light to transport and had the added bonus of not getting too hot as the breeze came through beautifully.

If anyone else has a wasp - avoiding tips I would be happy to hear them!’

BEAUTIFUL BADBURY BLUEBELLS

30 minutes from Swindon, Badbury Clumps has one of the most stunning bluebell woodlands.

With the warmer weather, bluebell season has come early this year so I think this is probably the last weekend to catch this amazing display.

The bluebells are immense and the most amazing purple haze across the woodland floor. There are big wide pathways with log border the edges so they've remained undamaged and there are little viewing platforms to stand on for a photo opportunity.

It's worth exploring the wider area too with some stunning countryside views and marked routes of different lengths. There's some lovely wild play areas for kids along the way and it's so wonderfully peaceful.

Looked after by the Natoinal Trust - parking is £2 for non members.
There's a coffee van open too and a great spot for a day out and picnic.

Badbury Clumps, near Faringdon

Head to SN7 7NJ for car park - and as you get nearer look out for signage as sat nav for this postcode isn't very reliable.

BEST BLUEBELL WALKS
If you’re looking for a family walk with the magic of bluebells, check out our guide to all the best in Surrey.

If you step into a patch of bluebells for that one quick photo - they will be damaged and struggle for next year.

To take a photo that looks like you’re nestled in flowers but not actually – you need to get creative with your positioning. Have your kids stand on a path and then you’ll need to find another path or on the curve of a path. Then crouch down to take your photo from a low position.

WELFORD PARK SNOWDROPS

I absolutely loved the snowdrop walk at Welford Park when I visited previously - it's definitely worth the journey and opens from 11am today.

North west of Newbury, this is THE place to go for a snowdrop walk I just wish my phone camera could have done it justice.

They're only open to the public for a short time just for snowdrop season. You can explore the the wider grounds and garden too with numerous little bridges over the river, winding pathways to explore and even a bamboo tunnel to walk through.

🐑The first lamb was born last night at Roves Farm and they've got 55 more to come over the next few days.

We've been going to Roves since my eldest was a toddler and the lambing has to be my most favourite time.

There are 2 flocks at Roves with the Poll Dorest ewes lambing now and they are very calm and friendly and enjoy all the attention they get at lambing time.

The January lambing will take place 24th – 26th followed by a couple of weeks to meet the lambs. Once all the lambs have arrived you can interact with them and their mum’s in the walk-in family pen from around 26th January.

A truly unique experience not to be missed!

If you're looking for a day out this weekend, there's LOTS indoors so don't worry about being cold and I can highly recommend the sausage baps at the cafe!
