🎥🤠 From Behind the Camera to the Wild West…
When I’m not knee-deep in video production / editing, I’m diving headfirst into another obsession — all things Wild West. I remember watching the occasional Western as a kid, but it wasn’t until my 20s that I truly appreciated the genre. Beyond the cliché of gunslingers, saloons, and Native Americans, I started to see the heart of these films — the raw drama that drives them.
Westerns have been a cornerstone of American cinema since the very beginning, riding waves of popularity over the decades. And in the last 10 years, we’ve seen a resurgence, thanks in large part to my all-time favourite writer/director — Taylor Sheridan. I mean, what a genius that man is!
Over the years, I’ve also written several movie and TV treatments and scripts, many set in the contemporary Western genre. What draws me to it is how it blends the old with the new, tackling timeless themes of justice, survival, and morality against a modern backdrop. It’s a genre that strips everything down to the core of the human condition.
So, getting the chance to visit my dad in Phoenix, AZ last month and explore iconic places like Tombstone and the Old Tucson Film Studio was absolutely incredible! If you’re into Westerns and southwestern US history, I thoroughly recommend it. Modern-day Phoenix also has a lot to offer too — the Musical Instrument Museum was amazing!
Another cool moment was having the incredible surprise of seeing George R. R. Martin himself in Tombstone, watching the gunfight show at the OK Corral, sitting a few seats away from me! As a big fan of his work, seeing such a legendary storyteller soaking up the Wild West vibes was very inspiring.
And as Wyatt Earp once said — a line that applies as much to filmmaking as it does to gunfights —
“Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” 🎯
