From The Bandroom

For our September edition of “From The Bandroom”, we’re back in Cumbria to visit the Egremont Town Band.

Established in 1904, after the demise of the Egremont Volunteer Band, they had their first engagement on 24th June at the Gosforth Annual Sports Day. Today, they are a traditional non-contesting village band performing regularly at events in the area.

The band rehearses at Egremont Parish Church Hall under conductor Paul Worthington. We’ll be talking to Paul and to players and officials of the band, but, as always, most of the show is filled with the music recorded on our visit to their bandroom.

We restart in September with Egremont Town Band, October’s programme is the Greater Manchester Youth Brass Band, and in November we’ll be visiting Tyldesley band. The year will finish, as usual, with a Christmas Day concert.

In this edition of “From The Bandroom” we’re having a day out at the Wetherby Drovers March and Hymn contest.

This popular event is now in its third year, and it’s grown bigger and better each time. We've had four crews out, three recording the hymn, entertainment march and bandstand march contests, and a fourth following me around and interviewing anyone we could catch unawares.

We’ll be talking to contest organiser Rob Gray and hearing from the adjudicators and players, but, as always, most of the show is filled with the music recorded on the day, and we’ve managed to include something from every band that took part.

Serenade Radio's brass band slot at 9 o'clock this evening features the Otley Brass Band, conducted by Sam Watson. The programme was originally broadcast as From The Bandroom #15 in March 2019.

We've had to remaster our old material, partly to better fit Serenade's time slot, but also to account for the fact that we've got much better equipment now than when we first started seven years ago. Enjoy!
