The Next Stage of Human Evolution

Dr. Shariq Ali
Valueversity

Throughout human history, every major technological breakthrough has transformed not only our tools but also the way we think. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is perhaps the most significant development in this continuing journey.
In my view, AI is not a replacement for human beings; rather, it is an evolutionary extension of human intelligence.

Neuroscience tells us that the brain is constantly trying to conserve energy. For this reason, tasks that are repeated frequently gradually become part of automatic processing.

Driving a car, typing on a keyboard, performing routine calculations, searching for information, or making everyday decisions are all examples of such activities.

During these tasks, the brain expends relatively little mental effort.
In contrast, when we are required to solve a novel problem, generate an original idea, connect seemingly unrelated concepts, or analyse a complex situation, the brain's executive functions and working memory become much more active.

These are the very capacities that underpin creativity, scientific inquiry, innovation, and discovery.

Although these processes demand considerably more mental energy, virtually every major achievement of human civilisation has emerged from them.

Imagine a researcher who needs to review one hundred scientific papers on a particular topic. In the past, most of the researcher's time would have been spent gathering, organising, and synthesising information. Today, AI can summarise those papers, compare their findings, and identify their key insights within minutes. Yet determining what new theory may emerge from that knowledge, which questions remain unanswered, and where future research should be directed still depends on human judgment.

Similarly, for a writer, AI can be an outstanding assistant in finding references, compiling data, preparing an initial draft, or refining language.

However, infusing an idea with human experience, emotion, insight, and meaning remains a uniquely human ability. This is where humans and artificial intelligence become not rivals, but ideal partners.

Perhaps the most profound transformation of the future will be that AI significantly reduces our cognitive load, allowing human beings to devote more of their mental energy to imagination, moral reasoning, scientific discovery, art, philosophy, and the exploration of new possibilities.

One of the brain's most remarkable characteristics is neuroplasticity—its ability to continuously adapt in response to new demands.
If AI assumes responsibility for routine cognitive tasks, humans will be free to develop their higher intellectual abilities more fully than ever before.

First, we invented machines to amplify the power of our hands. Then we launched the Industrial Revolution to multiply our physical strength. Today, we are creating artificial intelligence to expand the reach of our minds.

Perhaps this marks the beginning of the next stage in human evolution۔ A stage in which machines do not replace people, but instead enable them to become more creative, more insightful, and more capable than ever before.

In my opinion, the true purpose of artificial intelligence is not to replace humanity, but to empower human beings to realise the very best of their intellectual and creative potential.

Nature: A Master Engineer or a Master Tinkerer?

Shariq Ali
Valueversity

Imagine you are walking through a forest when you suddenly come across a watch that keeps perfect time.

Your immediate conclusion would be that it was carefully designed and built by a skilled engineer. It would never occur to you that the watch had somehow grown on a tree by chance.

For centuries, this same line of reasoning was used to explain the astonishing complexity of living organisms and the universe. Such an orderly, balanced, and intricate system, it was argued, must be the work of a perfect designer.
Evolutionary biology, however, presents a very different picture.

According to evolutionary theory, nature rarely starts from scratch. Instead, it builds upon structures that already exist, making small modifications, adapting them to new circumstances, and, over millions of years, giving rise to new forms of life. Each generation inherits the biological legacy of its ancestors and advances through only minor alterations and refinements.
In this sense, nature resembles not an engineer who designs every solution from the ground up, but an extraordinary tinkerer who solves new problems by reshaping and repurposing existing parts rather than inventing entirely new ones.
The sea turtle provides a beautiful illustration.
Its broad, powerful flippers are superbly adapted for swimming through the oceans. Yet those very same flippers become remarkably inefficient when the female crawls onto the shore and digs a nest in the sand for her eggs. The task is slow, laborious, and awkward.

If every organism had been designed from the beginning for each specific purpose, one might expect separate, highly specialized structures for swimming in the sea and nesting on land. Evolution, however, does not work that way. It always works with the material already available.
The human body tells the same story.

During embryonic development, the te**es initially form near the kidneys before descending into the sc***um, where the temperature is a few degrees lower than the body's core—a requirement for healthy s***m production. This solution serves its purpose well, but it also leaves behind a relatively weak area in the abdominal wall, making inguinal hernias possible later in life.
Evolution solved one problem, but at the cost of creating another vulnerability. It appears less like the product of perfect planning and more like an ingenious compromise built upon an inherited design.
Examples like these are found throughout biology.

They remind us that evolution does not strive for absolute perfection. Instead, it produces solutions that are sufficiently effective for survival and reproduction. Evolution always builds the future upon the foundations of the past; it cannot discard its inheritance and begin anew.

That is why nature often resembles not an engineer who redesigns every component from scratch, but a brilliant craftsman who achieves astonishing results despite working with limited materials.
Perhaps that is why living organisms are, at the same time, extraordinarily effective and unmistakably imperfect.

And perhaps nature's greatest miracle lies precisely here: it does not begin with perfection, but with imperfection. It transforms inherited flaws into opportunities, builds beauty upon incomplete foundations, creates ever greater complexity, and enables life to continually adapt to new challenges.
That is the true masterpiece of evolution.

Mary and the Red Rose
(The Hard Problem of Consciousness)

Shariq Ali
Valueversity

Mary was an extraordinary scientist. She was an expert in the brain and consciousness. There was no one in the world who knew more about the human brain than Mary.

She knew how the eyes detect light. She understood how retinal cells function, how neural signals travel to the brain, and which regions of the brain identify colors. If a person saw the color red, she knew exactly which neurons would become active and what chemical processes would occur.
But there was something unusual about Mary's life.

Since birth, she had lived in an environment where everything was black and white.
Her room was black and white. Her books were black and white.
Her clothes, her food, her computer screen, and even the world visible through her window consisted only of shades of black and white.
She knew everything about colors, yet she had never actually seen one.
Especially the color red.
She knew the wavelength of light reflected by a red rose.

She also knew which parts of the brain became active when someone perceived the color red. Yet she had never personally experienced redness through her own eyes.
Then one day, something remarkable happened.

For the first time in her life, Mary stepped out of her black-and-white room.

It was spring.
The air was filled with fragrance.

She looked toward a garden.
And there, before her, was a blooming rose.
A red rose.

For a few moments, Mary stood silently.
Her eyes remained fixed on the flower.

She knew that it was red.
But now she was no longer merely knowing.
Now she was seeing.
Now she was experiencing.

Did Mary learn something new?

Did something occur within her at that moment that could never be fully written down in any book?
For the first time, she discovered what it actually feels like to see the color red.

This was not a new equation.
No new neuron had been discovered.
No new scientific law had emerged.
And yet, something new had happened.
She had gained a personal experience that she did not possess before, despite all her scientific knowledge.

This is the question that philosopher David Chalmers calls the Hard Problem of Consciousness.
Science can tell us how the brain works.

It can explain which cells become active when we see the color red.
But one question remains.
Why does red feel red?

Pain is not merely a neural signal—why does it feel like pain?

Love is not merely a chemical interaction—why does it generate a subjective feeling?

These inner, personal, and non-transferable experiences are what philosophers call qualia.

Perhaps understanding the brain is possible.
But understanding how consciousness is illuminated from within—why a fragrance feels fragrant, why beauty feels beautiful, and why red appears red—remains one of the greatest mysteries of human knowledge.

And that mystery is known as the Hard Problem of Consciousness.

Real Emotions, Real Art

Real Emotions, Real Art

Dr Shariq Ali
Valueversity

Over the past few days, I have become increasingly convinced that genuine art does not always depend on studios, scripts, or expensive productions.

Sometimes it is born in those very moments of human life when people stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of a real challenge, a genuine sorrow, a shared hope, or a common dream. In such moments, emotions are not performed; they are lived with complete sincerity. Perhaps this is where art assumes its most powerful, its purest, and its most authentic form.

Many of humanity's greatest artistic achievements were not simply the products of royal patronage or professional expertise. Rather, they emerged from the collective expression of human emotions. Protest songs, revolutionary poetry, murals, community theatre, folk music, graffiti art, short films, and public anthems all derive their deepest strength from the reality that breathes behind them.

Today, the world of art has undergone a quiet yet profound transformation.

There was a time when filmmaking required large studios, elaborate sets, expensive cameras, and celebrated actors. Today, even an ordinary smartphone has become a powerful creative tool. A few seconds of video, a simple song, a single photograph, or a handful of heartfelt words can reach millions of people—provided they are driven not by artificial performance but by genuine human feeling.
Viewed through this lens, public gatherings around the world represent a remarkable cultural phenomenon.

From Cairo's Tahrir Square and Hong Kong's pro-democracy movements to demonstrations in Chile and France, from Kyiv's Maidan to the American civil rights movement, and, more recently, New Delhi's Jantar Mantar, history repeatedly shows that when ordinary people share a common experience, they do far more than chant slogans.

They write poetry, compose new songs, create hand-painted posters, fill walls and placards with their dreams, express themselves through humour and satire, produce short videos and social media reels, and communicate their emotions in ways that speak directly to the human heart.

In such moments, one may see a young musician playing a guitar, groups of students singing together, an artist creating within minutes an image that comes to symbolise an entire era, a short video or an internet meme representing the feelings of millions, or a single silent photograph leaving a deeper impression than a thousand speeches. These are not merely scenes of protest; they are living expressions of humanity's creative spirit.

The greatest strength of these creations lies not in technical perfection but in their authenticity. A professional actor can shed convincing tears, but a tear that falls from the eyes of someone genuinely experiencing hope, fear, love, injustice, or sacrifice carries a profoundly different emotional weight.

Perhaps this is why art rooted in real human experience often endures far longer than technically flawless productions.

This truth extends well beyond public protests. Natural disasters, international sporting triumphs, humanitarian relief efforts, and moments of collective joy or grief within communities all create circumstances in which human creativity emerges in its most natural form. These expressions eventually become part of the shared memory not only of a nation or a society but of humanity itself.

Perhaps the very definition of art will continue to evolve. The greatest works of the future may no longer be associated with the most expensive sets, the largest productions, or the most famous performers. Instead, they may be defined by the moment when an ordinary person expresses genuine feelings with honesty, courage, and sincerity before the world.

Ultimately, art is not merely about creating beauty. It is about connecting one human being with another. When truth guides expression, sincerity shapes emotion, and humanity gives purpose, an ordinary photograph, a brief video, a simple melody, or a few honest words can become a masterpiece.

Whether in Tahrir Square, Jantar Mantar, Maidan, or any public gathering anywhere in the world, the same lesson emerges time and again: the greatest art is not necessarily what is created beneath studio lights or in front of expensive cameras. It is the art born from lived experience, shared emotion, genuine conviction, and the enduring hope for a better world. Such art transcends its own time and becomes part of the collective memory of future generations.
