NEW ARRIVALS: JUNE 2024 : Narrating Art Forms of Northeast India: Mapping Literary Responses brings together insightful essays from a diverse group of scholars from across India, originally presented at the national conference on the Northeast in Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Divided into three parts, this anthology explores the rich tapestry of art forms that are deeply rooted in the culture and history of Northeast India.
In Part I, essays delve into the intricate dance forms and musical traditions of the Himalayan regions, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, uncovering the historical, cultural, and spiritual significance of these art forms. The contributors provide a nuanced understanding of the impact of these practices on local communities and their resilience over time. Part II focuses on the theory and interpretation of folklore, offering a counter-hegemonic analysis of Borgeet folksongs in Assam and examining the intricacies of Manipur’s folklore through a Jungian lens. Part III examines the relationship between folklore and modern narratives in literature and popular culture, exploring topics such as tattoos as a form of cultural preservation, the digital transformation of folk narratives in Manipur, and the exploration of indigenous epics. This anthology is a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of Northeast India’s cultural heritage, offering a comprehensive exploration of its artistic and folkloric traditions and their evolution in contemporary society.
BIO NOTES
Dr.KharingpamAhumChahong is Assistant Professor of English at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Besides teaching literature to students, Dr.Chahong is committed to not only resuscitating the vanishing tribal culture and art forms but also promoting and conserving the endangered tribal languages and literatures. His non-profit organization, the North-east Foundation for Education and Culture (NEFEC) works with grass root educationists to deliver quality education to the lowest rung of the society in the state of Manipur. His essay on literature in Tangkhul language is prescribed by the Tangkhul Literature Society for BA in Manipur University. Dr.Chahong has designed a paper titled “English Writings from the Northeast” which is part of B.A. (H) English and MA (English) syllabus since 2010 in the Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia. The papers were undoubtedly a first in any Indian University to be taught as a full-fledged independent paper. Dr.Chahong’s area of research interest includes, Folk Studies, Tribal Literature, Bible and Translation. Dr.Chahong writes poems in both English and in his mother tongue, Tangkhul.
Ananya Bora, a PhD scholar and Junior Research Fellow at Jamia Millia Islamia, co-edits this collection alongside Dr.Kharingpam. Bora’s research interests include care narratives, medical, and digital humanities. Aside from her academic interests, she loves graphic designing.
