Starring on our cover this issue is , who Jane celebrates as the most successful composer of love songs this country has ever had. As the russet leaves fall from the trees to reveal their intricate, beautiful silhouettes, Embroidery magazine dives into the run up to Christmas with an issue that is pure inspiration.

Our cover feature focuses on the work of Jane Sanders Stitchin in the Kitchen, who captures likenesses of a host of celebrated musicians in felt, stitch and mixed media. And, yes, that is Macca on the cover, with a multitude of hearts to celebrate him as the most successful composer of love songs this country has ever had.

Elsewhere, we preview some of the stunning finalists in the Hand & Lock Prize in the competition’s 25th anniversary year, and what’s coming up at Knit + Stitch Northern Ireland and Harrogate Knit+ Stitch Show

Our feature on eco-fashion is inspired by a group which has been taking Instagram by storm , while we also meet Elizabeth Scarlett Elizabeth Scarlett, head of the eponymous brand of embroidered velvet products. Elsewhere, we profile Lissie Baldwin lissiebaldwin and discover she’s working on a project that requires a multitude of feathers.

With a focus on art dolls, we chat to two artists with widely differing styles, Ella Goodwin and Ali Pickard , while we also go behind the scenes at Fine Cell Work, the charity and social enterprise helping prisoners out of a destructive spiral. Meanwhile, describes the joy to be found in searching for vintage haberdashery and fabric and incorporating it into her work.

There’s plenty more, including an artist who stitches in the silence of the forest .art, a look back at the work of Winsome Douglass, a short intro to the Opus Anglicanum-inspired pieces by the irreverent Tanya Bentham Opus Anglicanum, and a host of thoughtful gift ideas, plus book and exhibition reviews.

Don’t miss out on this issue!

Subscribe by midnight Sunday and we’ll make sure your subscription starts with it.

Artist, educator and writer Cas Holmes Artist is interested in the passage of time and the liminal spaces connecting land, people, and place. Using worn paper, cloth, paint and stitch Cas’s current work resonates with the ephemeral things experienced daily, everyday objects and items used or collated from her walks. “Making Connections” is a body of work centred around ideas of how our minds connect to “matter”, celebrating local connections following major life changes.

Join Cas in the Thread Talk on the 11th November as she shares how these connections inspire her creativity and evolve into artworks. Purchase your ticket here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/eg-thread-talks-cas-holmes-making-connections-tickets-1530462417289

Join Melanie Missin on 13th September for this online demonstration: Dyeing to do the Colour Wheel hosted by

Melanie loves dyeing fabrics and any other natural fibres she can. Over the years she has experimented with many recipes to create different variations in the colours.

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/eg-demo-dyeing-to-do-the-colour-wheel-with-melanie-missin-tickets-1369967542799

Using the colour theory, Procion dyes and some ‘recipes’, Melanie will show you how to create the colourwheel with three warm colour dyes, Red, Intense Blue and Golden Yellow and three cool colour dyes, Magenta, Lemon and Turquoise. Then wait for the magic to begin. You can achieve so many different colours or shades from three primary colours. Sometimes black is used as well which is a whole new dyeing game!

Now she dyes all her own embroidery threads, fabrics, lace, braids etc to use in her work, workshops and to sell.

“I hope you will enjoy this process and the outcomes as much as I do.”

Can't make the live event? There is an on demand ticket option. The event recording will be sent to you automatically when it is available.

If you're not already an Embroiderers' Guild member and would like to access our wide variety of events and other member benefits, you can for £42 per annum or twelve payments of £3.95 per month. Find out more via the link in their bio.
