Mild-mannered, handsome and geeky were all terms used to describe Neil Entwistle.

Yet this British computer engineer was convicted of shooting dead his wife and baby daughter at their home near Boston, Massachusetts.

Entwistle fled the scene, jumped on a plane and ran home to mum and dad. The American authorities caught up with him in London and put him on trial in the United States, where he was found guilty.

Despite the weight of evidence stacked against him, Neil Entwistle continues to protest his innocence, denying any part in the fatal shootings of 27-year-old Rachel and 9-month-old Lillian in January 2006.

When your social status gets you off a murder.

We visited the scene of where Bella Wright was shot and killed near the village of Little Stretton, Leicestershire, England on the 5th July 1919.

Her killer was a s*x offender but he was also an educated and middle-class army officer.

Those qualities got him acquitted by a jury.

The location is Bay View near Cleveland, Ohio. The scene of the crime is a colonial-style house perched on a cliff-top overlooking Lake Erie. The date is Sunday the 4th of July 1954.

The previous evening, Dr Sam Shepphard, a 31-year-old neurosurgeon and osteopath, and his wife Marilyn, entertained another couple to dinner. Marilyn was four months pregnant.

Afterwards, with their seven-year-old son, Samuel Reese, tucked up in bed, the adults watched a movie on TV, and Dr Sam, as everyone called him, fell asleep on the couch.

He’d had a busy day and was likely to be equally busy in the morning because the Shepphards had invited a number of their many friends to an Independence Day barbeque on their lawn. Dr Sheppard was still asleep when just after midnight, the other couple left.

What happened next is still a matter of conjecture.

It had been a typical Saturday night for George and Betty Wilson.
George had been to the football match in the afternoon. His local team, Nottingham Forest had beaten Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0.
During the evening, everyone was in good spirits. The children were in bed asleep, probably looking forward to doing something exciting on Sunday. The schools had just gone back after the summer holiday. The family had been at their new home for over a year, and they had settled into life in Nottingham.
George and Betty got a night cap for their three guests. They sat down in the lounge with their drinks. At about midnight, two of the friends headed home and George arranged a taxi for the last of their guests. When it arrived (about fifteen minutes later), George decided to take ‘Blackie’ the family dog for its regular evening walk, so he left at the same time as the taxi collected his friend. He locked the door as he left. Betty remained indoors and retired to the bedroom.
Approximately thirty minutes later, Betty heard Blackie barking outside. She went to check and opened the door. Blackie was stood outside but was behaving differently. Betty looked out into the night. There seemed to be no-one around, and no sign of her husband. Something made her glance down at the ground. There was something lying motionless.
It was George. He was barely alive and unable to say anything. Lying on the floor next to him were his keys, suggesting he was at the point of returning home.

Before the world knew the truth, Jimmy Savile was a knight of the realm, a charity icon, a national treasure. But behind the gold chains and public praise was a predator hiding in plain sight.
In this episode, we’re pulling apart one of the most disturbing cover-ups in British history.

Jimmy Savile was a DJ, a TV personality, a charity fundraiser, a national treasure. And behind that shell? A predator.

For decades, Jimmy Savile wormed his way into the heart of British public life. The BBC. Broadmoor. Even Buckingham Palace. All the while, he hid something monstrous. He was a pa******le. A serial abuser. But was he something else too? Was Jimmy Savile… a psychopath?

Local people hated the psycho-killer in this podcast so much they held a fireworks party outside the Scottish prison when he died. His name was Peter Tobin and he was only unmasked as a serial killer when the body of his final victim was discovered hidden under the floorboards of a church in Glasgow.

Tobin was eventually convicted of three murders, but his arrest set in train a cold-case investigation, Operation Anagram, that spanned six decades, and linked Tobin to a notorious series of Scottish murders –– the so-called Bible John killings.

How many women and girls did pa******le Peter Tobin really murder, and was he Bible John?

It’s time to head to the dark side – and be aware, this podcast contains graphic descriptions of murder and s*xual offences.

We looked at this case after Jacques returned from Lake Como with ‘a photograph of some photographs’ that were on display in a bookshop window.

The book was about an individual who was executed nearby 1945, and as Jacques recalls:

“‘It seemed a fitting place for it to happen to him. This is (and was) a wealthy area. A playground of the rich. It summed up the attitude of the person, who was as far removed as you can get, from the harsh reality of life for the Italian people.”
