This World Ocean Day 2022, we would like to celebrate the incredible work our friends at the Ocean Conservation Trust do.

In Issue FOUR of Coast Path Magazine, we ran a feature on how the trust connects people with the Ocean through Ocean experiences. The Trust know that people who experience and connect with the Ocean are more likely to love it and want to protect it. They have a passionate team of Ocean Discovery Rangers who run an exciting programme of Ocean experiences to allow people to connect with the Ocean, by getting them in,

The South West Coast is home to some amazing tidal pools. If you are like us and love getting in for a dip all year round, then the winter months can prove a little challenging with high waves and rough waters.

Saunton Beach, Devon is the latest location to join the ‘BAN CHEAP BODYBOARDS’ wave……

Both 'Saunton Beach Shop' and Saunton Surf Hire will not be stocking cheap polystyrene bodyboards this coming summer.

Luckily for us, this was an easy win, these guys have been on side for a while..

Lucie Tamlyn, Director - Saunton Beach Enterprises Ltd said ‘’Seeing the amount of broken polystyrene bodyboards either discarded or washed up on the beach, we knew it was an issue that we had to do something about so we decided to stop selling them in 2019 once our stock had ran out. We can only imagine the difference if there were none available to be bought in the local community - there would be no choice but to find longer lasting alternatives, with limited or no coastal environment impact, which would be fantastic.’’

‘’The decision to not sell these in demand items carries a financial cost to us as business’’ stated Matt John, partner at Saunton Surf hire. ‘’We firmly believe in helping customers opt for more sustainable options. Since working with Plastic Free North Devon on their ‘Protect our Playground’ pilot wooden bellyboard hire project we have seen a huge interest in the wooden alternatives. We are confident we will see interest in this scheme grow’’

Well I don't want to speak too soon but it looks like the indestructible kiosk has lived up to its reputation and survived another Beast from the East, even with a 10 tonne pontoon doing its best to upset things! (To be fair it has pushed it a little before we had a chance to halt its progress.)
Anyhow should be ok now as, for the eagle-eyed amongst you, you'll notice that I've now wedged a 'Steve' between the two so all good 😁
