NORTH EAST AEROSPACE COMPANY CANCELS SICK PAY FOR WORKERS - 96 PER CENT VOTE TO STRIKE

An aerospace company which has tried to cancel sick pay for workers now faces industrial action after a massive majority voted to strike.

Bosses at Gardner Aerospace are attempting to cut the first three days of sick pay for staff in Consett, County Durham,

Furious workers voted to strike with a 96 per cent majority on a turnout of 87 per cent.

Gardner Aerospace's Consett site produces high precision sheet metal components, which is heavy manual work, often resulting in directly resulted illness such as RSI, muscular skeletal conditions, and the development of hernias.

GMB will now meet members to discuss next steps.

Etain Stobbart, GMB Organiser, said:

'Gardner Aerospace proudly claims that their best investment is their people.

"We agree: it's huge profits are based on the physically demanding work of front-line staff.

"To try and reduce our members sick pay demonstrates they are not living their values.

"Instead of dealing with the root cause of injuries at work, Gardner is attempting to punish hard working staff.

"GMB will not accept this attack on our members terms and conditions.

"It's time for Gardner Aerospace to get back round the table and make this right.'
