Police Name Suspect and Confirm Arrests After Tragic Attack at North Manchester Synagogue

Statement from Counter Terrorism Police

The investigation into the attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in north Manchester this morning continues.

We can confirm that three suspects are currently in custody and have been arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism. They are two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s.

Scenes remain in place on White House Avenue, Crumpsall and Langley Crescent in Prestwich, which are also linked to the arrests.

We are now able to confirm that, although formal identification is yet to take place, we believe the person responsible for today’s attacks is 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie. He is a British citizen of Syrian descent.

A suspicious device worn by the attacker during the incident has been assessed and was deemed not to be viable.

Based on what we currently know, our records do not show any previous Prevent referrals relating to this individual.

Two innocent men were sadly pronounced dead following the incident.

Three other men remain in hospital with serious injuries. One sustained a stab wound and a second was struck by the car involved in the attack.

The third man later presented himself at hospital with an injury that may have been sustained as officers stopped the attacker.

We are working to formally identify those who have tragically been killed and provide support to their loved ones, in addition to the injured and the wider community.

We are working to understand the motivation behind the attack as the investigation continues.

Long-serving Slatyford driver takes the depot's first electric vehicle into service

The first electric bus has left Stagecoach’s Slatyford depot in Newcastle – driven by one of the company’s longest-serving drivers.

Newcastle-born Norman Fullard, who first passed his PCV test in 1971 and has strong family ties to the depot, drove the brand-new vehicle into service this morning.

With five decades of experience, 75-year-old Norman is one of Stagecoach’s longest serving drivers, having started with the company when it was Newcastle Corporation Transport, on 1 February 1971. He was transferred to Slatyford depot nine days later, where he has remained ever since.

Buses are firmly interwoven into the fabric of Norman’s life, having met his wife, Nancy, while she was working as a bus conductress at Slatyford. They married on 11 June 1976 and had four children, the youngest of which, Adam, is also a bus driver at the depot. They are also blessed with nine grandchildren.

Back in 1995, Norman also spent time on secondment as a driving instructor in Malawi; before heading off to East Africa again the following year to drive Stagecoach buses in Nairobi, Kenya. Although he really enjoyed the secondment and was offered a full-time position in Africa, he made the decision to return to the North East to raise his family.

Norman said:

“I still enjoy driving my bus and the best thing about the job is the feeling of job satisfaction, as I feel as though I have achieved something at the end of every day.

“I’ve seen a lot of changes over my time in the industry, but I think the biggest change that I’ve seen over the years is the volume of traffic on the roads.

“I’m delighted to be the first driver to take the one of the new electric vehicles out of Slatyford and it's great to be part of another piece of history here. I’m really looking forward to experiencing the benefits that they will bring to passengers and drivers alike for many years to come.”

Stagecoach North East Managing Director, Steve Walker, said:

“It’s fitting that Norman, a local lad with such an exemplary and diverse career as a Stagecoach driver, should be the first to take one of our EVs into service from Slatyford today.

“I know he’s seen a lot of changes over his long career, and it speaks volumes about his dedication and passion that he was looking forward to welcoming a new era of progress and development in local bus services.

“Our EVs not only offer comfort through air conditioning, e-leather seats and charging ports, they also offer better accessibility for physically, audio and visually impaired customers and save over 270,000 lbs of carbon emissions per year per vehicle.”

The bus is one of 18 EVs that will run from the Slatyford depot, once it is fully electrified in 2026. It follows Stagecoach announcement in May of plans to make Stockton-on-Tees the company’s first full electric fleet and depot. Another 20 EVs were also launched in Sunderland in December 2024.
